SERIES NOTES:

After Game 5: The Colorado Avalanche hosted and defeated the Arizona Coyotes 7-goals-1 to complete a 4-games-1 best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 1424 victory. With the series 1424 win, the Colorado Avalanche improve their best-of-7 NHL playoff series record to 21-13 overall and 11-5 in the Preliminary round. With the series 1424 loss, the Arizona Coyotes see their best-of-7 NHL playoff series record fall to 0-1 (as the Arizona Coyotes) overall and 0-1 (as the Arizona Coyotes) in the Preliminary round. The win order for the victorious Colorado Avalanche in series 1424 was WWLWW: Series 1424 thus becomes the 18th NHL Preliminary-round series, the 48th NHL series (all rounds), and the 125th MLB/NBA/NHL series (all rounds) to follow that win order to completion. The 22 goals tallied by Colorado in series 1424 are the most in a best-of-7 NHL playoff series lasting five games since series 1196, in which the Pittsburgh Penguins also notched 22 goals in their 2013 NHL Quarterfinals series against the Ottawa Senators.

After Game 4: The Colorado Avalanche visited and defeated the Arizona Coyotes 7-goals-1 to take a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 1424 lead of 3-games-1. When leading a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 3-games-1, the Colorado Avalanche have a series record of 10-2 and a Game 5 record of 7-5. When trailing a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 3-games-1, the Arizona Coyotes have a series record of 0-3 (as the Phoenix Coyotes) and a Game 5 record of 0-3 (as the Phoenix Coyotes).

After Game 3: The Arizona Coyotes hosted and bested the Colorado Avalanche 4-goals-2 to reduce the Colorado Avalanche best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL series 1424 lead to 2-games-1. When leading a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 2-games-1, the Colorado Avalanche have a series record of 12-5 and a Game 4 record of 10-7. When trailing a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 2-games-1, the Arizona Coyotes have a series record of 0-2 (as the precursor Phoenix Coyotes) and a Game 4 record of 1-1 (as the precursor Phoenix Coyotes). Series 1424 Game 3 is the first best-of-7 NHL playoff game victory for the Coyotes as the Arizona Coyotes.

After Game 2: The Colorado Avalanche hosted and defeated the Arizona Coyotes 3-goals-2 to take a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 1424 lead of 2-games-nil. When leading a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 2-games-nil, the Colorado Avalanche have a series record of 12-1 and a Game 3 record of 4-9. When trailing a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 2-games-nil, the Arizona Coyotes have a series record of 0-4 (as the Phoenix Coyotes) and a Game 3 record of 1-3 (as the Phoenix Coyotes). The sole Colorado Avalanche best-of-7 NHL playoff series loss upon having led 2-games-nil occurred in their last such series, in series 1225 to the Minnesota Wild in the 2014 NHL Preliminary round.

After Game 1: The Colorado Avalanche hosted and shut out the Arizona Coyotes 3-goals-nil to take a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 1424 lead of 1-game-nil. Before series 1424 Game 1, the last time in a best-of-7 NHL playoff game that the home team scored its first goal so late in a multi-goal shutout victory was in series 664 Game 4, in which the Vancouver Canucks hosted and defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs two-goals-nil in their 1994 NHL Semifinals series. Never before has the home team scored its first goal of a best-of-7 NHL playoff game so late in a three-plus goal shutout.

Pre-series assessment: In the 2019-20 NHL regular season, the Colorado Avalanche finished 18 points ahead of the Arizona Coyotes. From 1939 through the 2019 NHL Finals round, when NHL teams led their best-of-7 playoff series opponents by 18 regular-season points, they have posted a best-of-7 playoff series record of 12-6 (.667) in those series against those opponents. MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1424 is the 34th best-of-7 NHL playoff series for the Colorado Avalanche, and the first (in this incarnation as the "Arizona" Coyotes) for the Arizona Coyotes. Colorado won the previous best-of-7 NHL playoff series meeting against the old Phoenix Coyotes in series 804 (in the 2000 NHL Preliminary round).
