SERIES NOTES:

After Game 4: The New York Islanders visited and defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-goals-1 to complete a 4-games-nil best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 1389 victory. With the series 1389 win, the New York Islanders improve their best-of-7 NHL playoff series record to 23-19 overall and 4-9 in the Preliminary round. With the series 1389 loss, the Pittsburgh Penguins see their best-of-7 NHL playoff series record fall to 38-24 overall and 17-8 in the Preliminary round. The win order for the victorious New York Islanders in series 1389 was WWWW: Series 1389 thus becomes the 34th NHL Preliminary-round series, the 119th NHL series (all rounds), and the 229th MLB/NBA/NHL series (all rounds) to follow that win order to completion. In each of series 1389 Games 2-4, Pittsburgh took a 1-goal-nil lead, only to have that first goal be the Penguins only goal of the game in a losing effort.

After Game 3: The New York Islanders visited and bested the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-goals-1 to take a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 1389 lead of 3-games-nil. When leading a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 3-games-nil, the New York Islanders have a series record of 9-0 and a Game 4 record of 6-3. When trailing a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 3-games-nil, the Pittsburgh Penguins have a series record of 0-5 and a Game 4 record of 2-3. The Pittsburgh Penguins thus become the 359th MLB/NBA/NHL team to fall behind a best-of-7 playoff series 3-games-nil, and will strive to become the sixth team to win such a series in seven games with Games 4-7 victories. The irony is that the Islanders achieved such a comeback against the Penguins in the 1975 NHL Quarterfinals.

After Game 2: The New York Islanders hosted and bested the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-goals-1 to take a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 1389 lead of 2-games-nil. When leading a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 2-games-nil, the New York Islanders have a series record of 11-1 (with an active ten-series winning streak) and a Game 3 record of 9-3. When trailing a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 2-games-nil, the Pittsburgh Penguins have a series record of 5-7 and a Game 3 record of 7-5. The New York Islanders last led a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 2-goals-nil in series 418, against the Edmonton Oilers in the 1983 NHL Finals; the Islanders won Games 3-4 to sweep the series and extend their dynasty to four consecutive NHL championships.

After Game 1: The New York Islanders hosted and defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-goals-3 in overtime to take a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 1389 lead of 1-game-nil. When leading a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 1-game-nil, the New York Islanders have a series record of 15-5 and a Game 2 record of 12-8 (with an active six-Game 2 losing streak). When trailing a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 1-game-nil, the Pittsburgh Penguins have a series record of 15-15 and a Game 2 record of 18-12 (with an active five-Game 2 winning streak). The series 1389 Game 1 win extends the New York Islanders best-of-7 NHL playoff Game 1 winning streak to four games.

Pre-series assessment: In the 2018-19 NHL regular season, the New York Islanders finished three points ahead of the Pittsburgh Penguins. From 1939 through the 2018 NHL Finals round, when NHL teams led their best-of-7 playoff series opponents by three regular-season points, they have posted a best-of-7 playoff series record of 14-22 (.389) in those series against those opponents. MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1389 is the 42nd best-of-7 NHL playoff series for the New York Islanders, and the 62nd for the Pittsburgh Penguins. In best-of-7 NHL playoff series, the New York Islanders have an all-rounds series record of 22-19, a Preliminary-round series record of 3-9, and a Game 1 record of 20-21, while the Pittsburgh Penguins have an all-rounds series record of 38-23, a Preliminary-round series record of 17-7, and a Game 1 record of 31-30. Series 1389 is the fourth best-of-7 NHL playoff series meeting between the New York Islanders and the Pittsburgh Penguins.
