SERIES NOTES:

After Game 5: The Los Angeles Kings hosted and defeated the New York Rangers 3-goals-2 in double overtime to complete a 4-games-1 best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 1235 victory. With the series 1235 win, the Los Angeles Kings improve their best-of-7 NHL playoff series record to 18-20 overall and 2-1 in the Finals round. With the series 1235 loss, the New York Rangers see their best-of-7 NHL playoff series record fall to 30-38 overall and 2-4 in the Finals round. The win order for the victorious Los Angeles Kings in series 1235 was WWWLW: Series 1235 thus becomes the fourth NHL Finals-round series, the 48th NHL series (all rounds), and the 83rd MLB/NBA/NHL series (all rounds) to follow that win order to completion. Series 1235 Game 5 (and thus the 2014 NHL playoff season) ended 14:43 into the second overtime period, and is the 49th-longest best-of-7 NHL playoff game ever, the ninth-longest best-of-7 NHL Finals game ever, and the second-longest 2014 NHL playoff game (next only to series 1226 Game 1, in which the Blues in St. Louis defeated the Chicago Blackhawks 4-goals-3 at 0:26 into the third overtime period in the 2014 NHL Preliminary round). The Los Angeles Kings trailed the visiting Rangers by a goal as late as 7:55 into the third period of series 1235 Game 5. In the history of best-of-7 NHL playoff games from 1939 through 2013, inclusive, home teams trailing by a goal as late as 7:55 into the third period had a game record of 103-432 (.193).

After Game 4: The New York Rangers hosted and defeated the Los Angeles Kings 2-goals-1 to reduce the Los Angeles Kings best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL series 1235 lead to 3-games-1. When leading a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 3-games-1, the Los Angeles Kings have a series record of 5-0 and a Game 5 record of 2-3. When trailing a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 3-games-1, the New York Rangers have a series record of 1-16 (with the sole victory occurring in their last such series - series 1230 against the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2014 NHL Quarterfinals) and a Game 5 record of 5-12. Series 1235 Game 4 becomes the eighth best-of-7 NHL Finals game to feature a goal order of HHV, and the second best-of-7 NHL Finals Game 4 to do so (after Game 4 of the 1997 NHL Finals featuring the Philadelphia Flyers at the Detroit Red Wings - a series swept by Detroit).

After Game 3: The Los Angeles Kings visited and shut out the New York Rangers 3-goals-nil to take a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 1235 lead of 3-games-nil. When leading a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 3-games-nil, the Los Angeles Kings have a series record of 4-0 and a Game 4 record of 1-3. When trailing a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 3-games-nil, the New York Rangers have a series record of 0-11 and a Game 4 record of 5-6. Series 1235 marks the first 3-game-nil lead for the Los Angeles Kings since their championship 2012 season, in which they took 3-games-nil leads in all of the 2012 NHL Preliminary, Quarterfinals, Semifinals, and Finals rounds. The first goal of series 1235 Game 3 was scored by the visiting Los Angeles Kings at 19:59 of the first period. In the history of best-of-7 NHL playoff games, the last time that the first goal of a best-of-7 NHL playoff game was scored at 19:59 into the first period was in series 1004 Game 4, when the Ottawa Senators did so at home against the Anaheim Ducks in the 2007 NHL Finals.

After Game 2: The Los Angeles Kings hosted and defeated the New York Rangers 5-goals-4 in double overtime to take a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 1235 lead of 2-games-nil. When leading a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 2-games-nil, the Los Angeles Kings have a series record of 6-1 (with an active six-series winning streak) and a Game 3 record of 4-3. When trailing a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 2-games-nil, the New York Rangers have a series record of 2-20 and a Game 3 record of 11-11. The Los Angeles Kings trailed series 1235 Game 2 by two goals as late as 1:57 into the third period. In the history of best-of-7 NHL playoff games from 1939 through 2013, inclusive, home teams trailing by two goals as late as 1:57 into the third period had a game record of only 24-287 (.077). For the third straight NHL Finals, both Games 1-2 were decided in overtime. The 2014 Los Angeles Kings have become the first NHL team to win Games 1-2 of an NHL Finals in overtime since the Kings themselves did so in 2012. Series 1235 has become only the second best-of-7 NHL playoff series in which the team leading 2-games-nil won both games in overtime and never held a lead during the two games (the first: series 82, in which the Montreal Canadiens led the Detroit Red Wings 2-games-nil in their 1951 NHL Semifinals series - in series 82, the Montreal wins occurred in Detroit; in series 1235, the Los Angeles wins occurred on home ice). Three teams have lost Games 1-2 of a best-of-7 NHL Finals on the road but won the series: the 1971 Montreal Canadiens (series 238 over the Chicago Blackhawks); the 2009 Pittsburgh Penguins (series 1070 over the Detroit Red Wings); the 2011 Boston Bruins (series 1136 over the Vancouver Canucks).

After Game 1: The Los Angeles Kings hosted and topped the New York Rangers 3-goals-2 in overtime to take a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 1235 lead of 1-game-nil. When leading a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 1-game-nil, the Los Angeles Kings have a series record of 9-5 (with an active six-series winning streak beginning with the 2012 NHL Preliminary round) and a Game 2 record of 7-7 (with an active six-Game 2 winning streak beginning with the 2012 NHL Preliminary round). When trailing a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 1-game-nil, the New York Rangers have a series record of 9-26 and a Game 2 record of 13-22 (with an active six-Game 2 losing streak). Series 1235 Game 1 becomes the sixteenth best-of-7 NHL Finals-round game in which the home team wins after spotting the visitors a 2-goals-nil lead, and the fourth in that situation in which the winning goal occurred in overtime. The only previous best-of-7 NHL Finals game in which the road team scored the first two goals of the game but the home team answered with three consecutive goals for a 3-games-2 win was series 490 Game 6, in which the Philadelphia Flyers did so against the visiting Edmonton Oilers to force the 1987 NHL Finals to Game 7. The only teams to lose Game 1 of a best-of-7 NHL Finals series on the road but win the Finals are the Toronto Maple Leafs (1947, 1967), Montreal Canadiens (1971, 1986), Philadelphia Flyers (1974), Edmonton Oilers (1985), Pittsburgh Penguins (2009), and Boston Bruins (2011). The Los Angeles Kings trailed series 1235 Game 1 by two goals as late as 17:32 into the first period. In the history of best-of-7 NHL playoff series from 1939 through 2013, inclusive, home teams down two goals 17:32 into the first period had a game record of 39-192 (.169).

MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1235 is the 38th best-of-7 NHL playoff series for the Los Angeles Kings, and the 68th for the New York Rangers. In best-of-7 NHL playoff series, the Los Angeles Kings have an all-rounds series record of 17-20, a Finals-round series record of 1-1, and a Game 1 record of 14-23, while the New York Rangers have an all-rounds series record of 30-37, a Finals-round series record of 2-3, and a Game 1 record of 32-35. Series 1235 is the first best-of-7 NHL playoff series meeting between the Los Angeles Kings and the New York Rangers.
