SERIES NOTES:

After Game 7: The New York Rangers visited and bested the Pittsburgh Penguins 2-goals-1 to complete a 4-games-3 best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 1230 victory. With the series 1230 win, the New York Rangers improve their best-of-7 NHL playoff series record to 29-37 overall and 11-13 in the Quarterfinals round. With the series 1230 loss, the Pittsburgh Penguins see their best-of-7 NHL playoff series record fall to 29-21 overall and 8-10 in the Quarterfinals round. The win order for the victorious New York Rangers in series 1230 was WLLLWWW: Series 1230 thus becomes the second NHL Quarterfinals-round series, the eighth NHL series (all rounds), and the 14th MLB/NBA/NHL series (all rounds) to follow that win order to completion. With the series 1230 Game 7 loss in Pittsburgh, the Penguins tie the NHL Washington Capitals for the worst MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 home field/court/ice Game 7 record at 2-7 (among teams with more than two home field/court/ice Game 7 decisions).

After Game 6: The New York Rangers hosted and defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-goals-1 to tie best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 1230 at 3-games-all. When tied 3-games-all in a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series, the Pittsburgh Penguins have a Game 7 record of 7-6 (2-6 on home ice), while the New York Rangers have a Game 7 record of 7-5 (1-5 on road ice, with the sole win occurring in the last such series for the Rangers – series 1190, over the Capitals in Washington in the 2013 NHL Preliminary round.) Ironically, with series 1230 Game 7 in Pittsburgh, the home ice Game 7 record of the New York Rangers (a perfect 6-0) is a home field/court/ice MLB/NBA/NHL-best, while the road ice Game 7 record of the Pittsburgh Penguins (a perfect 5-0) is a road field/court/ice MLB/NBA/NHL-best. Only one previous NHL Quarterfinals series had a win-site order of LWWWLL @ HHVVHV through six games (as posted by the Pittsburgh Penguins in series 1230): In series 833, the Colorado Avalanche posted a win-site order of LWWWLL @ HHVVHV through six games against the Los Angeles Kings – Colorado won Game 7 at home, and proceeded to win the 2001 NHL championship.

After Game 5: The New York Rangers visited and bested the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-goals-1 to reduce the Pittsburgh Penguins best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL series 1230 lead to 3-games-2. When leading a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 3-games-2, the Pittsburgh Penguins have a series record of 10-6 and a Game 6 record of 9-7. When trailing a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 3-games-2, the New York Rangers have a series record of 3-17 (though 3-2 in their last five such series) and a Game 6 record of 6-14.

After Game 4: The Pittsburgh Penguins visited and defeated the New York Rangers 4-goals-2 to take a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 1230 lead of 3-games-1. When leading a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 3-games-1, the Pittsburgh Penguins have a series record of 9-2 and a Game 5 record of 7-4. When trailing a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 3-games-1, the New York Rangers have a series record of 0-16 and a Game 5 record of 4-12 (with an active seven-Game 5 losing streak). Of the seven previous NHL teams to post a win-site order of LWWW@HHVV (as Pittsburgh has) in a best-of-7 Quarterfinals series, all seven won the series, and five of the seven (New York Islanders, 1982; Pittsburgh Penguins, 1991; Detroit Red Wings, 1998; Colorado Avalanche, 2001; Chicago Blackhawks, 2010) went on to win the NHL championship that year.

After Game 3: The Pittsburgh Penguins visited and shut out the New York Rangers 2-goals-nil to take a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 1230 lead of 2-games-1. When leading a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 2-games-1, the Pittsburgh Penguins have a series record of 11-6 and a Game 4 record of 6-11. When trailing a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 2-games-1, the New York Rangers have a series record of 7-20 and a Game 4 record of 16-11.
