SERIES NOTES:

After Game 4: The Boston Bruins hosted and defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 1-goal-nil to sweep MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1200, four-games-nil. With the series 1200 win, the Boston Bruins improve their best-of-7 NHL playoff series record to 47-46 overall and 16-16 in the NHL Semifinals. With the series 1200 loss, the Pittsburgh Penguins see their best-of-7 NHL playoff series record fall to 28-20 overall and 4-4 in the NHL Semifinals. Series 1200 becomes the 25th best-of-7 NHL Semifinals series, the 110th best-of-7 NHL series (all rounds), and the 202nd best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL series (all rounds) to end in a four-game sweep. Three of the last four sweeps in the NHL Semifinals have now been achieved by the team without home-ice advantage. In series 1200, the Pittsburgh Penguins scored a total of two goals. The 2013 Pittsburgh Penguins thus tie the Philadelphia Flyers in series 849 (the 2002 Preliminary round) and the Montreal Canadiens in series 89 (the 1952 Finals round) for the second-fewest total goals by one team in a best-of-7 NHL playoff series. Series 1200 qualifies as a WhoWins™ best-of-7 Annihilation: Boston not only won four straight games but also never trailed in the series.

After Game 3: The Boston Bruins hosted and defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 2-goals-1 at the 15:19 mark of the second overtime period to take a 3-games-nil lead in MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1200. When leading a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 3-games-nil, the Boston Bruins have an 18-1 series record and a 13-6 Game 4 record. When trailing a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 3-games-nil, the Pittsburgh Penguins have a 0-4 series record and a 2-2 Game 4 record. Series 1200 Game 3, at 95:19, is the longest NHL Semifinals game in almost twenty years; it is the longest NHL Semifinals game since series 663, in which the New Jersey Devils visited and at the 15:23 mark of the second overtime period defeated the New York Rangers in Game 1 of their 1994 NHL Semifinals series. In the history of best-of-7 NHL playoff games from 1939 through 2012, inclusive, home teams such as Boston had a game record of 15-27 (.357) at the 15:18 mark of the second overtime period. The two total goals by the Pittsburgh Penguins in series 1200 Games 1-3 tie those by the 1952 Toronto Maple Leafs (in series 87) for the second-fewest by one team in Games 1-3 of a best-of-7 NHL Semifinals series (the fewest: zero, by the Minnesota Wild in series 886; the one goal total by the Minnesota Wild in that 2003 NHL Semifinals series stands as the record fewest by one team in a best-of-7 NHL playoff series).

After Game 2: The Boston Bruins visited and defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 6-goals-1 to take a 2-games-nil lead in MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1200. When leading a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 2-games-nil, the Boston Bruins have a 22-7 series record and a 19-10 Game 3 record (with an active four-Game 3 winning streak). When trailing a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 2-games-nil, the Pittsburgh Penguins have a 5-6 series record and a 7-4 Game 3 record. The five-goal road victory by the Boston Bruins is the largest margin of victory by a road team in Game 2 of a best-of-7 NHL Semifinals since series 174, in which the Detroit Red Wings defeated the Blackhawks in Chicago 7-goals-nil in Game 2 of the 1966 NHL Semifinals.

After Game 1: The Boston Bruins visited and defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-goals-nil to take a 1-game-nil lead in MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1200. When leading a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 1-game-nil, the Boston Bruins have a 33-14 series record and a 29-18 Game 2 record. When trailing a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 1-game-nil, the Pittsburgh Penguins have a 12-12 series record and a 13-11 Game 2 record. In the history of best-of-7 NHL Semifinals series, teams winning Game 1 by a 3-goals-nil score have a 3-2 series record overall and a 1-0 series record when Game 1 is on the road (series 73: Toronto Maple Leafs achieve a 3-goals-nil Game 1 win on the road and defeat the Boston Bruins in the 1949 NHL Semifinals).

Pre-series assessment: In the 2012-13 NHL regular season, the Pittsburgh Penguins finished ten points ahead of the Boston Bruins. From 1939 through the 2013 NHL Quarterfinals round, when NHL teams led their best-of-7 playoff series opponents by ten regular-season points, they have posted a 10-9 (.526) best-of-7 series record in those series against those opponents. MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1200 is the 93rd best-of-7 playoff series for Boston, and the 48th for Pittsburgh. In best-of-7 NHL playoff series, Boston has a 46-46 series record, a 15-16 Semifinals-round series record, and a 47-45 Game 1 record, while Pittsburgh has a 28-19 series record, a 4-3 Semifinals-round series record, and a 23-24 Game 1 record. Series 1200 is the fourth best-of-7 NHL playoff series meeting between Boston and Pittsburgh: Boston won series 354 in the 1979 NHL Quarterfinals, but Pittsburgh won series 588 in the 1991 NHL Semifinals and series 613 in the 1992 NHL Semifinals (en route to the 1991 and 1992 NHL championships).
