SERIES NOTES:

After Game 4: The San Antonio Spurs visited and defeated the Memphis Grizzlies 93-pts-86 for a four-game sweep of MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1216. The series 1216 win improves the San Antonio Spurs best-of-7 NBA playoff series record to 30-19 overall and 5-7 in the Semifinals. The series 1216 loss drops the Memphis Grizzlies best-of-7 NBA playoff series record to 3-6 overall and 0-1 in the Semifinals. Series 1216 becomes the 15th NBA Semifinals series, the 65th NBA series (all rounds), and the 201st MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series under the best-of-7 format to end in a four-game sweep.

After Game 3: The San Antonio Spurs visited and defeated the Memphis Grizzlies 104-pts-93 in the first overtime period to take a 3-games-nil lead in MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1216. When leading a best-of-7 NBA playoff series 3-games-nil, the San Antonio Spurs have a 11-0 series record and a 7-4 Game 4 record. When trailing a best-of-7 NBA playoff series 3-games-nil, the Memphis Grizzlies have a 0-3 series record and a 0-3 Game 4 record. San Antonio trailed Memphis by 16 points after the first quarter. In the history of best-of-7 NBA playoff games, road teams down sixteen points after the first quarter had a 0-13 game record, with all 13 losses double-digit losses. (The largest first-quarter deficit ever surmounted for a road team victory was 22 points, by the San Antonio Spurs in series 1180, in Los Angeles over the Clippers in Game 3 of their 2012 NBA Quarterfinals series.) The eleven-point scoring differential for the San Antonio Spurs in the first overtime period tied for the largest first overtime period scoring differential in best-of-7 NBA playoff game history, tying four previous teams (the last of which was the 2005 San Antonio Spurs, in series 944 Game 4 against the Denver Nuggets in their Preliminary-round series).

After Game 2: The San Antonio Spurs hosted and defeated the Memphis Grizzlies 93-pts-89 to take a 2-games-nil lead in MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1216. When leading a best-of-7 NBA playoff series 2-games-nil, the San Antonio Spurs have a 19-2 series record and an 11-10 Game 3 record. When trailing a best-of-7 NBA playoff series 2-games-nil, the Memphis Grizzlies have a 1-3 series record and a 1-3 Game 3 record. Memphis trailed series 1216 Game 2 by 12 points after three quarters, but rallied to send the game into overtime. In the history of best-of-7 NBA playoff games, road teams down a dozen points after three quarters either rallied to win in regulation or lost in overtime in six out of sixty-six games. Ironically, the first road team trailing by 12 points after three quarters to force overtime in a best-of-7 NBA playoff series was the San Antonio Spurs, in series 568 Game 5 in Portland against the Trailblazers in their 1990 NBA Quarterfinals series.

After Game 1: The San Antonio Spurs hosted and defeated the Memphis Grizzlies 105-pts-83 to take a 1-game-nil lead in MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1216. When leading a best-of-7 NBA playoff series 1-game-nil, the San Antonio Spurs have a 23-5 series record and a 21-7 Game 2 record. When trailing a best-of-7 NBA playoff series 1-game-nil, the Memphis Grizzlies have a 1-1 series record and a 0-2 Game 2 record. The 22-point win by the San Antonio Spurs is the largest victory margin in Game 1 of an NBA Semifinals series since series 768, in which the Utah Jazz defeated the Los Angeles Lakers by 35 points in Game 1 of their 1998 NBA Semifinals series (en route to a four-game sweep).

Pre-series assessment: In the 2012-13 NBA regular season, San Antonio finished two games ahead of Memphis. From 1947 through the 2013 NBA Preliminary round, inclusive, when NBA teams led their best-of-7 playoff series opponents by two regular-season games, they have posted an 18-11 (.621) best-of-7 series record in those series against those opponents. MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1216 is the ninth best-of-7 NBA playoff series for Memphis, and the 49th for San Antonio. In best-of-7 NBA playoff series, Memphis has a 3-5 series record, a 0-0 Semifinals-round series record, and a 2-6 Game 1 record, while San Antonio has a 29-19 series record, a 4-7 Semifinals-round record, and a 28-20 Game 1 record (with an active five-Game 1 winning streak). Series 1216 is the third best-of-7 NBA playoff series meeting between Memphis and San Antonio: San Antonio won series 927, in the 2004 Preliminary round; Memphis won series 1141, in the 2011 Preliminary round.
