SERIES NOTES:

After Game 5: The Los Angeles Kings visited and, on a goal 4:27 into the first overtime period, defeated the Vancouver Canucks 2-goals-1 for a 4-games-1 MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1159 win. With the series 1159 win, the Los Angeles Kings improve their best-of-7 NHL playoff series record to 9-19 overall and 6-8 in the NHL Preliminary round. With the series 1159 loss, the Vancouver Canucks see their best-of-7 NHL playoff series record fall to 15-18 overall and 9-7 in the NHL Preliminary round. The series 1159 win order for the victorious Los Angeles Kings was WWWLW: Series 1159 thus becomes the 14th NHL Preliminary-round series, the 45th NHL series (all rounds), and the 78th MLB/NBA/NHL series (all rounds) to follow that win order to completion. The series 1159 victory by the Los Angeles Kings is their first best-of-7 NHL playoff series victory since series 828, in which they defeated the Detroit Red Wings in the 2001 NHL Preliminary round. The Los Angeles Kings thus advance to meet the series 1160-winning St. Louis Blues in series 1165, in the 2012 NHL Quarterfinals.

After Game 4: Sending MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1159 back to British Columbia, the Vancouver Canucks visited and defeated the Los Angeles Kings 3-goals-1 to cut the Los Angeles series lead to 3-games-1. Vancouver thus avoids a four-game sweep and keeps alive its hopes of surmounting a 3-games-nil deficit. When leading a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 3-games-1, the Los Angeles Kings have a series record of 1-0 and a Game 5 record of 0-1 (both against the Calgary Flames in series 557, in the 1990 NHL Preliminary round). When trailing a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 3-games-1, the Vancouver Canucks have a series record of 3-5 and a Game 5 record of 6-2.

After Game 3: With MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1159 in California, the Los Angeles Kings hosted and defeated the Vancouver Canucks 1-goal-nil on a goal 6:30 into the third period. The 2012 Vancouver Canucks thus become the 299th MLB/NBA/NHL team to trail a best-of-7 playoff series 3-games-nil, and will attempt to become the fifth team to surmount such an obstacle and win the series 4-games-3. Series 1159 is the first best-of-7 NHL playoff series in which the Los Angeles Kings have held a 3-games-nil lead. When trailing a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 3-games-nil, the Vancouver Canucks have a series record of 0-3 and a Game 4 record of 0-3.

After Game 2: The Los Angeles Kings once again visited and defeated the Vancouver Canucks 4-goals-2, thus taking a 2-games-nil MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1159 lead. When leading a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 2-games-nil, the Los Angeles Kings have a 0-1 series record and a 0-1 Game 3 record (suffering the loss in series 190, in the 1968 NHL Quarterfinals against the old Minnesota North Stars); when trailing a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 2-games-nil, the Vancouver Canucks have a 0-3 series record and a 0-3 Game 3 record (all three series losses were four-game sweeps).

After Game 1: The Los Angeles Kings visited and defeated the Vancouver Canucks 4-goals-2 to take a 1-game-nil MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1159 lead. When leading a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 1-game-nil, the Los Angeles Kings have a 3-5 series record and a 1-7 Game 2 record (with an active seven-Game 2 losing streak); when trailing a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 1-game-nil, the Vancouver Canucks have a 4-7 series record and an 8-3 Game 2 record.

Pre-series assessment: In the 2011-12 regular season, Vancouver finished 16 points ahead of Los Angeles. From 1939 through 2011, when NHL teams led their best-of-7 playoff series opponents by 16 regular-season points, they have posted a 9-1 (.900) best-of-7 series record in those series against those opponents. MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1159 is the 28th best-of-7 playoff series for Los Angeles, and the 33rd for Vancouver. In best-of-7 playoff series, Los Angeles has an 8-19 series record, a 5-8 Preliminary-round series record, and an 8-19 Game 1 record, while Vancouver has a 15-17 series record, a 9-6 Preliminary-round series record, and a 21-11 Game 1 record. Series 1159 is the fifth best-of-7 NHL playoff series meeting between Los Angeles and Vancouver; the teams have split their previous four series against each other.
