SERIES NOTES:

After Game 6: The Miami Heat visited and defeated the Indiana Pacers 105-pts-93 for a 4-games-2 win of MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1178. With the series 1178 victory, the Miami Heat improve their best-of-7 NBA playoff series record to 13-8 overall and 5-2 in the NBA Quarterfinals (with an active four-series winning streak). With the series 1178 loss, the Indiana Pacers see their best-of-7 NBA playoff series record fall to 10-11 overall and 6-2 in the NBA Quarterfinals. Miami trailed Indiana 28-pts-21 after the first quarter. In the history of best-of-7 format NBA playoff games from 1947 to just before series 1178 Game 6, road teams down seven points after one quarter had a 28-76 (.269) game record. The last three road teams to trail by seven points after one quarter but win the game have been the Miami Heat (in series 1149 Game 2 against the Chicago Bulls in the 2011 NBA Semifinals; in series 1178 Game 4 against the Indiana Pacers in the 2012 NBA Quarterfinals; in series 1178 Game 6 against the Indiana Pacers in the 2012 NBA Quarterfinals). The win order followed by the victorious Miami Heat in series 1178 was WLLWWW: Series 1178 thus becomes the fourth NBA Quarterfinals series, the sixth NBA series (all rounds), and the 29th MLB/NBA/NHL series (all rounds) to follow such a win order to completion.

After Game 5: With MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1178 in south Florida for Game 5, the Miami Heat hosted and defeated the Indiana Pacers 115-pts-83 to take a 3-games-2 series 1178 lead. When leading a best-of-7 NBA playoff series 3-games-2, the Miami Heat have a 4-2 series record and a 3-3 Game 6 record. When trailing a best-of-7 NBA playoff series 3-games-2, the Indiana Pacers have a 0-8 series record and a 2-6 Game 6 record with an active six-Game 6 losing streak.

After Game 4: The Miami Heat visited and defeated the Indiana Pacers 101-pts-93 to tie MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1178 at 2-games-all. When tied 2-games-all in a best-of-7 NBA playoff series, the Miami Heat have a 3-5 series record and a 5-3 Game 5 record, while the Indiana Pacers have a 3-7 series record and 4-6 Game 5 record. Series 1178 thus becomes only the second 2012 NBA playoff series (with series 1179, the other 2012 NBA Eastern Conference Semifinals series) to be tied 2-games-all after four games – none of the 2012 NBA Preliminary-round series and 2012 NBA Western Conference Semifinals series were tied after four games.

After Game 3: With MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1178 in Indiana for Games 3-4, the Indiana Pacers hosted and defeated the Miami Heat 94-pts-75 to take a 2-games-nil series 1178 lead. When leading a best-of-7 NBA playoff series 2-games-1, the Indiana Pacers have a 7-2 series record and a 4-5 Game 4 record. When trailing a best-of-7 NBA playoff series 2-games-1, the Miami Heat have a 2-1 series record and a 2-1 Game 4 record.

After Game 2: The Indiana Pacers visited and defeated the Miami Heat 78-pts-75 to tie MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1178 at 1-game-all. When tied 1-game-all in a best-of-7 NBA playoff series, the Miami Heat have a 4-4 series record and a 7-1 Game 3 record with an active seven-Game 3 winning streak, while the Indiana Pacers have a 4-5 series record and a 6-3 Game 3 record with an active four-Game 3 winning streak. In the history of best-of-7 NBA playoff series, in only one previous series did a team win Game 1 by 9 points but lose Game 2 by 3 points: In series 346, the old Seattle Supersonics did so against the Portland Trailblazers in the 1978 NBA Quarterfinals – Seattle won the series in six games.

After Game 1: The Miami Heat hosted and defeated the Indiana Pacers 95-pts-86 to take a 1-game-nil lead in MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1178. When leading a best-of-7 NBA playoff series 1-game-nil, the Miami Heat have an 8-2 series record and a 7-3 Game 2 record, while the Indiana Pacers have a 2-8 series record and a 5-5 Game 2 record.

Pre-series assessment: In the 2011-12 NBA regular season, the Miami Heat finished four games ahead of the Indiana Pacers. From 1947 through the 2012 NBA Preliminary round, inclusive, when NBA teams led their best-of-7 playoff series opponents by four regular-season games, they have posted a 22-8 (.733) best-of-7 series record in those series against those opponents. MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1178 is the 21st best-of-7 NBA playoff series for the Indiana Pacers, and the 21st for the Miami Heat as well. In best-of-7 NBA playoff series, Indiana has a 10-10 series record, a 6-1 Quarterfinals-round series record, and a 10-10 Game 1 record, while Miami has a 12-8 series record, a 4-2 Quarterfinals-round record, and a 10-10 Game 1 record. Series 1178 is the second best-of-7 NBA playoff series meeting between the Indiana Pacers and the Miami Heat: Indiana won series 929 in the 2004 NBA Quarterfinals.
