SERIES NOTES:

After Game 7: Winning Game 7 on the road, the Los Angeles Clippers defeated the Memphis Grizzlies 82-pts-72 for a 4-games-3 victory in MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1177. With the series 1177 win, the Los Angeles Clippers improve their best-of-7 NBA playoff series record to 2-1 overall and 2-0 in the NBA Preliminary round. With the series 1177 loss, the Memphis Grizzlies see their best-of-7 NBA playoff series record fall to 1-5 overall and 1-4 in the NBA Preliminary round. The series 1177 win order for the victorious Los Angeles Clippers was WLWWLLW: Series 1177 thus becomes the first NBA Preliminary-round series, the fifth NBA series (all rounds), and the 13th MLB/NBA/NHL series (all rounds) to follow that win order to completion. The Los Angeles Clippers thus advance to meet the San Antonio Spurs (winners of series 1174) in series 1180, in the 2012 NBA Quarterfinals. Series 1177 is the last series in the 2012 NBA Preliminary round to be concluded.

After Game 6: The Memphis Grizzlies visited and defeated the Los Angeles Clippers 90-pts-88 to force MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1177 to a decisive Game 7 in Tennessee. The Los Angeles Clippers have a Game 7 record of 0-1, having lost in Phoenix to the Suns in series 983, in the 2006 NBA Quarterfinals. The Memphis Grizzlies likewise have a Game 7 record of 0-1, having lost in Oklahoma City to the Thunder in series 1147, in the 2011 NBA Quarterfinals. All else equal (irrespective of Games 1-6 win order and site order) in best-of-7 NBA playoff series history from 1947-2011, inclusive, home teams in the NBA have a Game 7 record of 86-21 (.804).

After Game 5: The Memphis Grizzlies hosted and defeated the Los Angeles Clippers 92-pts-80 to reduce the Clippers’ MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1177 lead to 3-games-2. The Los Angeles Clippers are leading a best-of-7 NBA playoff series 3-games-2 for the first time. When trailing a best-of-7 NBA playoff series 3-games-2, the Memphis Grizzlies have a 1-0 Game 6 record but a 0-1 series record. In the history of best-of-7 NBA playoff series (all rounds), when a team (such as the Clippers) leads with win/site order of WLWWL @ VVHHV, it has a current nine-Game 6 winning streak.

After Game 4: It took an overtime period, but the Los Angeles Clippers hosted and defeated the Memphis Grizzlies 101-pts-97 to take a 3-games-1 lead in MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1177. When leading a best-of-7 NBA playoff series 3-games-1, the Los Angeles Clippers have a 1-0 series record and a 1-0 Game 5 record; the Memphis Grizzlies are trailing a best-of-7 NBA playoff series 1-game-nil for the first time. Series 1177 Game 4 is the last 2012 NBA Preliminary-round Game 4 to be completed. The 2012 NBA Preliminary round thus becomes the first best-of-7 NBA Preliminary round in which none of the eight Preliminary-round series were tied 2-games-all after four games.

After Game 3: With MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1177 in southern California for Games 3-4, the Los Angeles Clippers hosted and defeated the Memphis Grizzlies 87-pts-86 to take a 2-games-1 series 1177 lead. When leading a best-of-7 NBA playoff series 2-games-1, the Los Angeles Clippers have a 1-0 series record and a 1-0 Game 4 record – both wins occurred in series 978 over the Denver Nuggets in the 2006 NBA Preliminary round. Now in their sixth best-of-7 NBA playoff series, the Memphis Grizzlies trail such a series 2-games-1 for the first time.

After Game 2: The Memphis Grizzlies hosted and defeated the Los Angeles Clippers 105-pts-98 to tie MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1177 at 1-game-all. When tied 1-game-all in a best-of-7 NBA playoff series, the Memphis Grizzlies have a 1-1 series record and a 2-0 Game 3 record, while the Los Angeles Clippers have a 0-1 series record and a 0-1 Game 3 record (courtesy of the Phoenix Suns in series 983, in the 2006 NBA Quarterfinals).

After Game 1: Outscoring the host Memphis Grizzlies 35-pts-13 in the fourth quarter, the Los Angeles Clippers accomplished one of the greatest best-of-7 format NBA in-game comebacks ever to defeat Memphis 99-pts-98 for a 1-game-nil lead in MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1177. When leading a best-of-7 NBA playoff series 1-game-nil, the Los Angeles Clippers have a 1-0 series record and a 1-0 Game 2 record. When trailing a best-of-7 NBA playoff series 1-game-nil, the Memphis Grizzlies have a 0-3 series record and a 0-3 Game 2 record; all three series losses were four-game sweeps. The Clippers trailed series 1177 Game 1 by 18 points after one quarter, 19 points after two quarters, and 21 points after three quarters. In the history of best-of-7 NBA playoff games from 1947 through 2011, inclusive, road teams down 18 points after the first quarter had a game record of only 1-8 (in series 184 Game 6, the San Francisco Warriors trailed the Hawks in St. Louis by 18 points after the first quarter, but won this 1967 NBA Semifinals game 112-pts-107). In the history of best-of-7 NBA playoff games from 1947 through 2011, inclusive, road teams down 19 points after two quarters had a game record of 0-14 (the biggest best-of-7 format road team deficit at halftime surmounted for a game victory was 21 points, by which the visiting Baltimore Bullets trailed the Warriors in Philadelphia in series 70 Game 2; Baltimore won 66-pts-63 in this 1948 NBA Finals battle). And in the history of best-of-7 NBA playoff games from 1947 through 2011, inclusive, road teams down 21 points or more after three quarters had a game record of 0-175, thus making series 1177 Game 1 the greatest fourth-quarter comeback ever by a road team in a best-of-7 format NBA playoff game. Prior to series 1177 Game 1, any NBA team (home or road) trailing a best-of-7 playoff game by 21 or more points after three quarters had a game record of 1-214; the sole winner was the Boston Celtics, which trailed the New Jersey Nets in series 867 Game 3 in Boston by 21 points after three quarters but won this 2002 NBA Semifinals battle 94-pts-90. The Los Angeles Clippers in series 1177 Game 1 thus tie the Boston Celtics in series 867 Game 3 for the greatest fourth-quarter comeback ever – from a 21-point deficit after three quarters - to win a best-of-7 NBA playoff game, irrespective of site.

Pre-series assessment: In the 2011-12 NBA regular season, the Memphis Grizzlies finished one game ahead of the Los Angeles Clippers. From 1947 through the 2011 NBA Finals round, inclusive, when NBA teams led their best-of-7 playoff series opponents by one regular-season game, they have posted a 16-18 (.471) best-of-7 series record in those series against those opponents. MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1177 is the third best-of-7 NBA playoff series for the Los Angeles Clippers, and the sixth for Memphis. In best-of-7 NBA playoff series, the Los Angeles Clippers have a 1-1 series record, a 1-0 Preliminary-round series record, and a 1-1 Game 1 record, while Memphis has a 1-4 series record, a 1-3 Preliminary-round record, and a 2-3 Game 1 record. Series 1177 is the first best-of-7 NBA playoff series meeting between the Los Angeles Clippers and Memphis.
