SERIES NOTES:

Post-series assessment: The San Jose Sharks defeated the Detroit Red Wings 4-games-3 in MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1133. With the series 1133 win, the San Jose Sharks improve their best-of-7 NHL playoff series record to 13-13 overall and 3-7 in the Quarterfinals. With the series 1133 loss, the Detroit Red Wings see their best-of-7 NHL playoff series record fall to 54-40 overall and 10-8 in the Quarterfinals. The win order for the victorious San Jose Sharks in series 1133 was WWWLLLW: Series 1133 thus becomes the first NHL Quarterfinals series, the fifth NHL series (all rounds), and the eighth MLB/NBA/NHL series (all rounds) to follow that win order to completion. The victorious San Jose Sharks thus advance to face the Vancouver Canucks in series 1135, the 2011 NHL Western Conference Finals. Given that in series 1126 (in the 2011 NHL Preliminary round), Vancouver also won Games 1-3, lost Games 4-6, and won Game 7, series 1135 will mark the first MLB/NBA/NHL match-up ever between two teams which (earlier in the same playoff season) both experienced the WWWLLLW roller-coaster of a win order. In series 1133 Game 3, the San Jose Sharks tied the Red Wings in Detroit 3-goals-all and won in overtime 4-goals-3: San Jose trailed by one goal as late as 15:51 into the third period - in the history of best-of-7 format NHL playoff games from 1939 through 2010, road teams down a goal as late as 15:51 into the third period had a game record of only 34-504 (.063). In series 1133 Game 4, Detroit hosted San Jose, and took a 3-goals-nil lead before winning the game on a late regulation goal, 4-goals-3. In series 1133 Game 5, Detroit trailed the Sharks in San Jose 3-goals-1 as late as 3:42 into the third period, but rallied for a 4-goals-3 victory: In the history of best-of-7 NHL playoff games from 1939 through 2010, road teams down two goals 3:42 into the third period had a game record of only 17-382 (.043). In the history of best-of-7 NHL Quarterfinals series, series 1133 is the first (in three tries) in which a team won Games 1-3 and lost Games 4-6, with Games 1-2 and 5 at home and Games 3-4 and 6 on the road, and then won the series with a Game 7 victory.

Pre-series assessment: In the 2010-11 regular season, San Jose finished one point ahead of Detroit. From 1939 through the 2011 NHL Preliminary round, when NHL teams led their best-of-7 playoff series opponents by one regular-season point, they have posted an 11-3 (.786) best-of-7 series record in those series against those opponents. MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1133 is the 94th best-of-7 NHL playoff series for the Detroit Red Wings, and the 26th for the San Jose Sharks. In best-of-7 playoff series, Detroit has a 54-39 series record, a 10-7 Quarterfinals-round series record, and a 52-41 Game 1 record, while San Jose has a 12-13 series record, a 2-7 Quarterfinals-round record, and a 12-13 Game 1 record. Series 1133 is the fifth NHL best-of-7 playoff series meeting between Detroit and San Jose; the two teams have split the first four best-of-7 NHL playoff series played between them.
