SERIES NOTES:

Post-series assessment: The San Jose Sharks defeated the Detroit Red Wings 4-games-1 in MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1099. With the series 1099 win, the San Jose Sharks improve their best-of-7 NHL playoff series record to 11-12 overall and 2-7 in the Quarterfinals (ending a three-series Quarterfinals losing streak). With the series 1099 loss, the Detroit Red Wings lower their best-of-7 NHL playoff series record to 53-39 overall and 10-7 in the Quarterfinals (ending a three-series Quarterfinals winning streak). The victorious San Jose Sharks have posted a WWWLW win order in series 1099: Series 1099 thus becomes the 15th NHL Quarterfinals series, the 44th NHL series (all rounds), and the 74th MLB/NBA/NHL series (all rounds) to follow that win order to completion. In series 1099 Game 1, the host San Jose Sharks erupted for three goals within 79 seconds en route to a 4-goals-3 victory. The three goals were the fastest three consecutive goals by one team since MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 836 (2001 NHL Semifinals) Game 4, in which the Colorado Avalanche tallied thrice within 78 seconds in St. Louis against the Blues. The three goals were the fastest three consecutive goals on home ice by a team since series 701 (1996 NHL Preliminary round) Game 1, in which the Panthers in Florida thrice scored within 77 seconds against the visiting Boston Bruins. With their series 1099 Game 3 overtime victory in Detroit over the Red Wings, the San Jose Sharks had won Games 1-3 of their series against Detroit by a 4-goals-3 score in each game. Series 1099 thus became the third MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series in which the team taking a 3-games-nil lead did so by the same score in each game. The first such series pitted the Chicago Blackhawks against Detroit in series 217 (in the 1970 NHL Quarterfinals): Chicago won Games 1-3 by a 4-goals-2 score and would win Game 4 by the same score. In series 634 (in the 1993 NHL Quarterfinals), the Montreal Canadiens defeated the Buffalo Sabres 4-goals-3 in each of Games 1-3; Montreal would also post a Game 4 victory 4-goals-3. In series 1099 Game 3, the San Jose Sharks trailed by two goals as late as 6:41 into the third period before tying the game in regulation and winning in overtime. In the history of best-of-7 NHL playoff series from 1939 through 2009, road teams trailing by two goals as late as 6:41 into the third period had a game record of only 10-388 (.025). Series 1099 Game 4 featured the fourth-fastest game to six goals by one team in the history of best-of-7 NHL playoff games. The Detroit Red Wings tallied their sixth goal of the game 3:05 into the second period - the fastest to six goals by one team in a best-of-7 game since series 535 (1989 NHL Quarterfinals) Game 5, in which the Penguins in Pittsburgh scored their sixth goal 17:44 into the first period against the Philadelphia Flyers.

Pre-series assessment: In the 2009-10 regular season, the San Jose Sharks finished eleven points ahead of the Detroit Red Wings. From 1939 through the 2010 NHL Preliminary round, when NHL teams led their best-of-7 playoff series opponents by eleven regular-season points, they have posted a 9-10 (.474) best-of-7 series record in those series against those opponents. MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1099 is the 92nd best-of-7 playoff series for the Detroit Red Wings, and the 23rd for San Jose. In best-of-7 NHL playoff series, Detroit has a 53-38 series record, a 10-6 Quarterfinals-round series record with an active three-series winning streak, and a 51-40 Game 1 record, while San Jose has a 10-12 series record, a 1-7 Quarterfinals-round record with an active three-series losing streak, and a 10-12 Game 1 record with an active four-Game 1 losing streak. Series 1099 is the fourth best-of-7 NHL playoff series meeting between Detroit and San Jose, with San Jose having won series 655 (in the 1994 NHL Preliminary round) and Detroit having won series 683 (in the 1995 NHL Quarterfinals round) and series 1000 (in the 2007 NHL Quarterfinals round).
