SERIES NOTES:

Post-series assessment: Trailing 3-games-nil, the Philadelphia Flyers defeated the Boston Bruins 4-games-3 in MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1098. With the series 1098 win, the Philadelphia Flyers improve their best-of-7 NHL playoff series record to 35-27 overall and 16-7 in the Quarterfinals round. With the series 1098 loss, the Boston Bruins see their best-of-7 NHL playoff series record fall to 40-45 overall and 13-10 (with an active four-series losing streak) in the Quarterfinals round. The win order for the victorious Philadelphia Flyers in series 1098 was LLLWWWW: Series 1098 thus becomes the second NHL Quarterfinals series, the third NHL series (all rounds), and the fourth MLB/NBA/NHL series (all rounds) to follow this win order to completion. Series 1098 joins series 42 (the 1942 NHL Finals), series 295 (in the 1975 NHL Quarterfinals), and series 936 (in the 2004 MLB Semifinals) as the only best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series in which a team fell behind 3-games-nil but won 4-games-3. Boston becomes the first city with a team that surmounted a 3-games-nil deficit for a 4-games-3 victory (the MLB Boston Red Sox in series 936) and a team that surrendered a 3-games-nil lead for a 4-games-3 loss (the NHL Boston Bruins in series 1098). In the history of best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series from 1905 through the 2010 NBA/NHL Quarterfinals, teams taking a 3-games-nil lead now have a 281-4 (.986) series record. As in series 1098 in which Philadelphia surmounted a 3-games-nil deficit for a 4-games-3 victory, so it was in series 1098 Game 7 that Philadelphia surmounted a 3-goals-nil deficit for a 4-goals-3 victory (Game 7, a microcosm of the series itself). Boston's series 1098 Game 7 three-goal lead lasted as late as 17:11 into the first period: In the history of best-of-7 NHL playoff series from 1939 through the start of 14 May 2010, home teams leading by three goals with 17:11 elapsed had a series record of 69-0 (1.000). The Philadelphia comeback series victory from a 3-games-nil deficit was highly improbable; the Philadelphia comeback Game 7 victory from a 3-goals-nil deficit was unprecedented. Since series 370, in which Boston lost to the eventual 1980 NHL champion New York Islanders (the Islanders' first of four consecutive titles) in the 1980 NHL Quarterfinals to see their best-of-7 NHL playoff series record fall to 24-25, the Bruins have lost more best-of-7 playoff series than any other MLB/NBA/NHL franchise. Series 1098 represents the Boston Bruins' 45th best-of-7 NHL playoff series loss; given the circumstances, it is hard to fathom a harder loss for the Bruins to bear.

Pre-series assessment: In the 2009-10 NHL regular season, the Boston Bruins finished three points ahead of the Philadelphia Flyers. From 1939 through the 2010 NHL Preliminary round, when NHL teams led their best-of-7 playoff series opponents by three regular-season points, they have posted an 11-16 (.407) best-of-7 series record in those series against those opponents, with an active five-series losing streak. MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1098 is the 62nd best-of-7 playoff series for the Philadelphia Flyers, and the 85th for the Boston Bruins. In best-of-7 NHL playoff series, Philadelphia has a 34-27 series record, a 15-7 Quarterfinals-round series record, and a 29-32 Game 1 record, while Boston has a 40-44 series record, a 13-9 Quarterfinals-round record with an active three-series losing streak, and a 42-42 Game 1 record. Series 1098 is the fifth best-of-7 NHL playoff series meeting between Philadelphia and Boston, with Philadelphia having won series 283 (the 1974 NHL Finals) and series 312 (in the 1976 NHL Semifinals round), while Boston won series 327 (in the 1977 NHL Semifinals round) and series 342 (in the 1978 NHL Semifinals round); Boston won Game 1 of all four of these series against Philadelphia.
