With the series 1097 loss, the defending NHL champion Pittsburgh Penguins see their best-of-7 NHL playoff series record fall to 26-17 overall and 7-9 in the Quarterfinals. The victorious Montreal Canadiens posted a series 1097 win order of LWLWLWW: Series 1097 thus becomes the fifth NHL Quarterfinals series, the tenth NHL series (all rounds), and the 18th MLB/NBA/NHL series (all rounds) to follow that win order to completion.

Pre-series assessment: In the 2009-10 NHL regular season, the Pittsburgh Penguins finished thirteen points ahead of the Montreal Canadiens. From 1939 through the 2010 NHL Preliminary round, when NHL teams led their best-of-7 playoff series opponents by thirteen regular-season points, they have posted an 11-8 (.579) best-of-7 series record in those series against those opponents. MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1097 is the 109th best-of-7 playoff series for the Montreal Canadiens, and the 43rd for Pittsburgh. In best-of-7 NHL playoff series, Montreal has a 73-35 series record, a 14-12 Quarterfinals-round series record with an active four-series losing streak (Montreal last won a Quarterfinals round in 1993 - the last year in which they won the NHL championship), and a 68-40 Game 1 record, while Pittsburgh has a 26-16 series record, a 7-8 Quarterfinals-round record with an active three-series winning streak, and a 19-23 Game 1 record. Series 1097 is the second best-of-7 NHL playoff series meeting between Montreal and Pittsburgh, with Montreal having won series 749 (in the 1998 NHL Preliminary round).
