SERIES NOTES:

After Game 5: The Detroit Red Wings hosted and defeated the Chicago Blackhawks 2-goals-1 in the first overtime period for a 4-games-1 MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1069 victory. With the series 1069 victory, the Detroit Red Wings improve their best-of-7 NHL playoff series record to 52-37 overall and 19-13 in the Semifinals round. With the series 1069 loss, the Chicago Blackhawks see their best-of-7 NHL playoff series record fall to 28-38 overall and 7-19 in the Semifinals round. With the series 1069 win, the Detroit Red Wings extend their best-of-7 NHL playoff series winning streak to seven. The win order for the victorious Detroit Red Wings in series 1069 was WWLWW: Series 1069 thus becomes the seventh NHL Semifinals series, the 35th NHL series (all rounds), and the 96th MLB/NBA/NHL series (all rounds) to follow this win order to completion. The Detroit Red Wings will now meet the Pittsburgh Penguins in series 1070, the 2009 NHL Finals.

After Game 4: The Detroit Red Wings visited and defeated the Chicago Blackhawks 6-goals-1 to take a 3-games-1 lead in MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1069. When leading a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 3-games-1, the Detroit Red Wings have a series record of 16-2 with a 10-series winning streak, and a Game 5 record of 13-5. When trailing a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 3-games-1, the Chicago Blackhawks have a series record of 0-8 and a Game 5 record of 2-6. In the history of best-of-7 NHL playoff series from 1939 through the 2009 NHL Quarterfinals, teams leading 3-games-1 with a Game 4 victory margin of five goals have a perfect 3-0 series record.

After Game 3: With MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1069 in Chicago for Games 3-4, the Blackhawks hosted and defeated the Detroit Red Wings 4-goals-3 in overtime. Detroit now leads their series 2-games-1. When leading a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 2-games-1, the Detroit Red Wings have a series record of 23-9 and a Game 4 record of 13-19. When trailing a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 2-games-1, the Chicago Blackhawks have a series record of 8-15 and a Game 4 record of 17-6. In the history of best-of-7 NHL playoff series from 1939 through the 2009 Quarterfinals, when a team such as Detroit wins Game 1 by three goals, wins Game 2 by one goal, and loses Game 3 by one goal, its series record is 7-2 (.778). A favorable precedent for the Chicago Blackhawks remains series 166, in which the Detroit Red Wings won Games 1-2 on home ice, lost Game 3 in Chicago, and lost the series in seven games to the Blackhawks in the 1965 NHL Semifinals.

After Game 2: The Detroit Red Wings hosted and defeated the Chicago Blackhawks 3-goals-2 in overtime to take a 2-games-nil lead in MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1069. When leading a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 2-games-nil, the Detroit Red Wings have a series record of 27-6 (with an eight-series winning streak) and a Game 3 record of 18-15; when trailing a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 2-games-nil, the Chicago Blackhawks have a 4-25 series record and a 14-15 Game 3 record. In the NHL Semifinals, the last team to take a 2-games-nil series lead but lose the series was the Boston Bruins in series 588: Boston won Games 1-2 on home ice, but lost Games 3-6 in the 1991 Semifinals to the eventual 1991 NHL champion Pittsburgh Penguins. A favorable precedent for the Chicago Blackhawks occurred in series 166, in which the Detroit Red Wings won Games 1-2 on home ice but lost the series in seven games to Chicago in the 1965 Semifinals. Series 1069 becomes the second best-of-7 NHL playoff series in which a team won Game 1 by a 5-goals-2 score and Game 2 by a 3-goals-2 score: The first was series 998, in which the Buffalo Sabres did so against the New York Rangers in their 2007 Quarterfinals series; Buffalo won the series in six games.

After Game 1: The Detroit Red Wings hosted and defeated the Chicago Blackhawks 5-goals-2 to take a 1-game-nil lead in MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1069. When leading a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 1-game-nil, the Detroit Red Wings have a series record of 36-13 and a Game 2 record of 33-16; when trailing a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 1-game-nil, the Chicago Blackhawks have identical series and Game 2 records of 12-29. The Detroit Red Wings are on an active six-series winning streak after having won Game 1 ... but then, they are on an active six-series winning streak irrespective of Game 1 outcome (i.e., they have won every playoff series in 2008 and thus far in 2009).

Pre-series assessment: In the 2008-09 regular season, Detroit finished eight points ahead of Chicago. From 1939 through the 2009 NHL Quarterfinals, when NHL teams led their best-of-7 playoff series opponents by eight regular-season points, they have posted a 14-6 (.700) best-of-7 series record in those series against those opponents. MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1069 is the 66th best-of-7 playoff series for the Chicago Blackhawks, and the 89th for the Detroit Red Wings. In best-of-7 playoff series, Chicago has a 28-37 series record, a 7-18 Semifinals-round series record, and a 24-41 Game 1 record, while Detroit has a 51-37 series record, an 18-13 Semifinals-round record, and a 49-39 Game 1 record. Series 1069 is the 12th best-of-7 NHL playoff series meeting between Chicago and Detroit; Chicago won six of the first eleven.
