After Game 4: Completing the first four-game sweep in the NHL Semifinals since 2003 (when the Anaheim Mighty Ducks achieved the feat against the Minnesota Wild in MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 886), the Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the host Carolina Hurricanes 4-goals-1 for a 4-games-nil series 1068 victory. With the series 1068 win, the Pittsburgh Penguins improve their best-of-7 NHL playoff series record to 24-16 overall and 4-3 in the Semifinals round. With the series 1068 loss, the Carolina Hurricanes see their best-of-7 NHL playoff series record fall to 9-4 overall and 2-1 in the Semifinals round. The series 1068 loss also ends the Carolina six-series winning streak. Series 1068 is the 23rd four-game sweep in the NHL Semifinals, the 103rd four-game sweep in the NHL (all rounds), and the 181st in the MLB/NBA/NHL (all rounds). The Pittsburgh Penguins (in series 220 against the Oakland Seals in the 1970 Quarterfinals) and the Dallas Stars (in series 658 against the St. Louis Blues in the 1994 Preliminary round) are the only two NHL teams to win their first-ever best-of-7 NHL playoff series by a four-game sweep; series 1068 is the sixth four-game sweep achieved by Pittsburgh and the first suffered by Carolina.

When trailing a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 2-games-nil, the Carolina Hurricanes have a 1-1 series record and a 1-1 Game 3 record. In the history of best-of-7 NHL playoff series from 1939 through the 2009 Quarterfinals, teams that win Game 1 by one goal and Game 2 by three goals have a 20-6 series record with a four-series winning streak.
