SERIES NOTES:

Post-series assessment: The Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Washington Capitals 4-games-3 in MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1065. With the series 1065 win, Pittsburgh improves its best-of-7 NHL playoff series record to 23-16 overall and 7-8 in the Quarterfinals round. With the series 1065 loss, Washington sees its best-of-7 NHL playoff series record fall to 9-18 overall and 2-6 in the Quarterfinals round. The Pittsburgh Penguins extend their Game 7 winning streak to three with the 6-goals-2 victory in Washington over the Capitals. The two Pittsburgh goals eight seconds apart from each other appear to be the fastest two goals by one team in NHL Game 7 history, breaking the old mark of 14 seconds (set by the Minnesota North Stars, in Los Angeles against the Kings in series 190, in the 1968 NHL Quarterfinals). The win order by the victorious Pittsburgh Penguins in series 1065 was LLWWWLW: Series 1065 thus becomes the third NHL Quarterfinals series, the seventh NHL series (all rounds), and the 13th MLB/NBA/NHL series (all rounds) to follow this win order to completion. Pittsburgh will now meet the winner of series 1064 (between the Carolina Hurricanes and the Boston Bruins) in series 1068 - the NHL Eastern Conference Finals in the NHL Semifinals round.

Pre-series assessment: In the 2008-09 regular season, Washington finished nine points ahead of Pittsburgh. From 1939 through the 2009 NHL Preliminary round, when NHL teams led their best-of-7 playoff series opponents by nine regular-season points, they have posted a 13-13 (.500) best-of-7 series record in those series against those opponents. MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1065 is the 39th best-of-7 playoff series for Pittsburgh, and the 27th for Washington. In best-of-7 playoff series, Pittsburgh has a 22-16 series record, a 6-8 Quarterfinals-round series record, and an 18-20 Game 1 record, while Washington has a 9-17 series record, a 2-5 Quarterfinals-round record, and a 16-10 Game 1 record. Series 1065 is the eighth best-of-7 NHL playoff series meeting between Pittsburgh and Washington; Pittsburgh has won six of the previous seven series between the two.
