SERIES NOTES:

Post-series assessment: With a tying and winning goal in the last eighty seconds of regulation play in MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1058 Game 7, the visiting Carolina Hurricanes defeated the host New Jersey Devils in that Game 7 for a 4-games-3 series 1058 victory. The series 1058 win improves the Carolina best-of-7 NHL series record to 8-3 overall and 3-2 in the Preliminary round, and thus lengthens their series-winning streak to five. The series 1058 loss drops the New Jersey best-of-7 NHL series record to 22-16 overall and 9-10 in the Preliminary round. The win order for the victorious Carolina Hurricanes in series 1058 was LWLWLWW: Series 1058 thus becomes the second NHL Preliminary-round series, the ninth NHL series (all rounds), and the 17th MLB/NBA/NHL series (all rounds) to follow this win order to completion. Never before in an NHL Game 7 had a road team trailed so late and won: In series 631 Game 7 in the 1993 NHL Preliminary round, the host Detroit Red Wings held a late one-goal lead before the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs tied the game with 2:43 left in regulation and won it at 2:35 into overtime; by contrast, Carolina tied New Jersey with only 1:20 left in regulation (before winning the game on the first-ever game-winning goal in the last minute of regulation in a Game 7). The latest into an NHL Game 7 that a team trailed but won was 18:45 into the third period of series 357 Game 7 in the 1979 NHL Semifinals - the host Montreal Canadiens then tied the visiting Boston Bruins one second later, with 1:14 left in regulation, and won the game at 9:33 into overtime; the 2009 Carolina Hurricanes missed tying this mark by a mere six seconds. In the history of best-of-7 NHL playoff series from 1939 through the 2008 Finals, road teams trailing by one goal with 1:21 left in regulation had an 18-471 (.037) game record.

Pre-series assessment: In the 2008-09 regular season, New Jersey finished nine points ahead of Carolina. From 1939 through the 2008 NHL Finals, when NHL teams led their best-of-7 playoff series opponents by nine regular-season points, they have posted a 13-12 (.520) best-of-7 series record in those series against those opponents. MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1058 is the 11th best-of-7 playoff series for Carolina, and the 38th for New Jersey. In best-of-7 playoff series, Carolina has a 7-3 series record (with an active four-series winning streak), a 2-2 Prelim-round series record, and a 5-5 Game 1 record, while New Jersey has a 22-15 series record, a 9-9 Prelim-round record, and an 18-19 Game 1 record. Series 1058 is the fourth best-of-7 meeting between Carolina and New Jersey; Carolina won two of the first three such meetings.
