SERIES NOTES:

After Game 5: The Los Angeles Lakers visited and defeated the Orlando Magic 99-pts-86 to win MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1085 - the 2009 NBA Finals - 4-games-1. The 2009 NBA championship is the tenth NBA championship for the Los Angeles Lakers, and their first since their 2000-2002 three-peat in series 819, 844, and 869. With the series 1085 victory, the Lakers improve their best-of-7 NBA playoff series record to 62-28 overall and 10-14 in the Finals. With the series 1085 loss, the Orlando Magic see their best-of-7 NBA playoff series record fall to 7-6 overall and 0-2 in the Finals. The win order in series 1085 for the victorious Los Angeles Lakers was WWLWW: Series 1085 thus becomes the fifth NBA Finals, the 49th NBA series (all rounds), and the 97th MLB/NBA/NHL series (all rounds) to follow that win order to completion.

After Game 4: Trailing by three points with under twelve seconds left in regulation, the Los Angeles Lakers parlayed two missed Orlando Magic free throws into a tying three-point shot to send the game into overtime, and then won MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1085 Game 4 in the first overtime, 99-pts-91, in Orlando for a 3-games-1 lead. When leading a best-of-7 NBA playoff series 3-games-1, the Los Angeles Lakers have a 29-1 series record (the sole loss was to Phoenix in series 977, in the 2006 Preliminary round) and a 19-11 Game 5 record. When trailing a best-of-7 NBA playoff series 3-games-1, the Orlando Magic have a 0-1 series and Game 5 record. Los Angeles trailed Orlando by 12 points at halftime: In the history of best-of-7 NBA playoff series from 1947 through Game 3 of the 2009 Finals, road teams down 12 points at halftime had only a 5-54 (.085) game record. The 2009 NBA Finals are the first NBA Finals series in a quarter-century to feature two overtime games: In the 1984 Finals, Boston won Games 2 and 4 in overtime against the Lakers, just as the Lakers won Games 2 and 4 in overtime against Orlando in the 2009 Finals. Two overtime games were also played in the 1974, 1970, 1957, and 1952 Finals; never have there been three or more OT games in a single NBA Finals series. NBA teams such as Los Angeles which lead 3-games-1 in the Finals, irrespective of site, have a perfect 29-0 series record. NBA teams such as Los Angeles which lead 3-games-1 with Games 1-2 at home and Games 3-4 on the road have a 119-1 (.992) series record irrespective of round - the sole loss in that situation was sustained in series 691 by the Phoenix Suns to the Houston Rockets, in the 1995 NBA Quarterfinals. This 119-1 (.992) series record is better than that for MLB/NBA/NHL teams up 3-games-nil irrespective of round/site (275-3 [.989]).

After Game 3: With MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1085 in Florida for Games 3-5, the Orlando Magic hosted and defeated the Los Angeles Lakers 108-pts-104 to reduce the Los Angeles 2009 NBA Finals lead to 2-games-1. When the L.A. Lakers lead a best-of-7 NBA playoff series 2-games-1, they have a series record of 36-5 (with an active five-series winning streak) and a Game 4 record of 23-18. When the Orlando Magic trail a best-of-7 NBA playoff series 2-games-1, they have a series record of 1-1 and a Game 4 record of 1-1. In the history of best-of-7 NBA Finals series from 1947 through 2008, inclusive, teams (such as the 2009 Lakers) that lead the series 2-games-1 who then won Game 4 have a 25-0 series record.

After Game 2: It took an overtime period, but the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the visiting Orlando Magic 101-pts-96 to take a 2-games-nil lead in MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1085. When the Los Angeles Lakers have a 2-games-nil lead in best-of-7 NBA playoff series, they have a 37-1 series record (with an active 30-series winning streak) and a 19-19 Game 3 record. When the Orlando Magic trail a best-of-7 NBA playoff series 2-games-nil, they have a 0-4 series record and a 1-3 Game 2 record. The sole series which Los Angeles lost after having led 2-games-nil was series 215, the 1969 NBA Finals against the Boston Celtics. Forty years later, the Orlando Magic look upon the 1969 Celtics as having set a favorable precedent.

After Game 1: The Los Angeles Lakers opened MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1085 with a 100-pts-75 victory over the Orlando Magic in Game 1 of the 2009 NBA Finals in Los Angeles. When leading a best-of-7 NBA playoff series 1-game-nil, the Los Angeles Lakers have a 51-7 series record and a 38-20 Game 2 record. When trailing a best-of-7 NBA playoff series 1-game-nil, the Orlando Magic have a 1-4 series record and a 1-4 Game 2 record. Said records for Orlando when down 1-game-nil were 0-4 (both series and Game 2) until series 1073, in which the Magic won both Game 2 and the series against the Philadelphia 76ers in the 2009 NBA Preliminary round.

Pre-series assessment: In the 2008-09 regular season, the Los Angeles Lakers finished six games ahead of Orlando. From 1947 through the 2009 NBA Semifinals, when NBA teams led their best-of-7 playoff series opponents by six regular-season games, they have posted a 15-4 (.789) best-of-7 series record in those series against those opponents. MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1085 is the 13th best-of-7 playoff series for Orlando, and the 90th for the Los Angeles Lakers. In best-of-7 NBA playoff series, Orlando has a 7-5 series record, a 0-1 Finals-round series record, and a 7-5 Game 1 record, while the Lakers have a 61-28 series record, a 9-14 Finals-round record, and a 58-31 Game 1 record. Series 1085 is the first best-of-7 NBA playoff series meeting between the Orlando Magic and the Los Angeles Lakers.
