SERIES NOTES:

After Game 5: The Philadelphia Phillies visited and defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-runs-1 to win MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1054, 4-games-1. With the series 1054 win, Philadelphia improves its best-of-7 MLB playoff series record to 3-4 overall and 2-0 in the MLB Semifinals. With the series 1054 loss, Los Angeles sees its best-of-7 MLB playoff series record fall to 6-6 overall and 1-2 in the MLB Semifinals. The win order for the victorious Philadelphia Phillies in series 1054 was WWLWW: Series 1054 among MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series thus becomes the seventh MLB Semifinals series, the 13th MLB series (all rounds), and the 93rd MLB/NBA/NHL series (all rounds) to follow this win order to completion. The WWLWW win order was also that of series 525, the 1988 World Series, which was the last best-of-7 playoff series victory by the Los Angeles Dodgers, twenty years ago. The Philadelphia Phillies thus advance to their first MLB Finals in fifteen years, to meet the series 1053 winner.

After Game 4: The Philadelphia Phillies visited and defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 7-runs-5 to take a 3-games-1 lead in MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1054. In this, the seventh best-of-7 MLB playoff series for the Philadelphia Phillies, series 1054 is the first in which they have led 3-games-1 after four games. When trailing a best-of-7 MLB playoff series 3-games-1, the Los Angeles Dodgers have a 0-2 series record and a 1-1 Game 5 record; the two losses occurred in series 291 (to the Oakland Athletics in the 1974 World Series) and in series 336 (to the New York Yankees in the 1977 World Series). Philadelphia trailed Los Angeles 5-runs-3 after seven full innings of series 1054 Game 4. In 822 best-of-7 format MLB playoff games from 1905 through 2007, inclusive, road teams trailing by two runs after seven full innings had a game record of only 10-77 (.115).

After Game 3: With MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1054 in California, the host Los Angeles Dodgers notched five runs in the bottom of the first inning en route to a 7-runs-2 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies, thus halving the Philadelphia series lead to 2-games-1. When leading a best-of-7 MLB playoff series 2-games-1, the Philadelphia Phillies have a series record of 1-0 and a Game 4 record of 0-1, with both the series win and the Game 4 loss occurring in series 381 (the 1980 World Series) against the Kansas City Royals. When trailing a best-of-7 MLB playoff series 2-games-1, the Los Angeles Dodgers have a series record of 3-2 and a Game 4 record of 3-2. In the history of best-of-7 MLB playoff series, teams that win Games 1-2 and lose Game 3 (such as Philadelphia) irrespective of site have a 9-2 series record with an active nine-series winning streak. The five-run bottom of the first by the Los Angeles Dodgers set a record for most runs in the bottom of the first by a team in a best-of-7 MLB playoff series which had lost Games 1-2 of that series on the road. The previous record was three runs, set in series 396 by the Los Angeles Dodgers (in the 1981 World Series against the New York Yankees, which Los Angeles won in six games), and tied in series 937 by the Houston Astros (in the 2004 National League Championship Series against the St. Louis Cardinals).

After Game 2: The Philadelphia Phillies again hosted and again defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers, this time 8-runs-5, to take a 2-games-nil lead in MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1054. When leading a best-of-7 MLB playoff series 2-games-nil, the Philadelphia Phillies have a 1-0 series record and a 0-1 Game 3 record (from series 381, the 1980 World Series). When trailing a best-of-7 MLB playoff series 2-games-nil, the Los Angeles Dodgers have a 2-1 series record and a 2-1 Game 3 record. Series 1054 Game 2 is the fifteenth best-of-7 format MLB playoff game in which a team (such as Philadelphia) tallied 8+ runs in the first three innings, and the first since series 1020 Game 6 (in which the Boston Red Sox plated ten runs in the first three innings against the Cleveland Indians in Boston in the 2007 American League Championship Series).

After Game 1: The Philadelphia Phillies hosted and defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-runs-2 to take a 1-game-nil lead in MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1054. When leading a best-of-7 MLB playoff series 1-game-nil, the Philadelphia Phillies have a 2-2 series record and a 1-3 Game 2 record. When trailing a best-of-7 MLB playoff series 1-game-nil, the Los Angeles Dodgers have a 4-3 series record and a 4-3 Game 2 record. In the history of best-of-7 MLB playoff series, teams such as Philadelphia that win Game 1 at home by one run have a 16-9 series record; three of the sixteen winners in that situation were the Phillies in series 381 (the 1980 World Series), the Phillies in series 649 (the 1993 National League Championship Series), and the Dodgers in series 525 (the 1988 World Series). Series 1054 Game 1 is the first best-of-7 MLB playoff game in which the home team 1) was scoreless after five innings, 2) trailed entering the bottom of the sixth inning, and 3) won the game since series 872 Game 6, in which the San Francisco Giants led 4-runs-nil after 5.5 innings but lost 6-runs-5 to the Angels in Anaheim in the 2002 World Series.

Pre-series assessment: In the 2008 regular season, the Philadelphia Phillies finished eight games ahead of the Los Angeles Dodgers. From 1905 through the 2008 NHL and NBA Finals, when MLB teams led their best-of-7 playoff series opponents by eight regular-season games, they have posted a 2-2 (.500) best-of-7 series record in those series against those opponents. MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1054 is the 12th best-of-7 playoff series for the Los Angeles Dodgers, and the seventh for the Philadelphia Phillies. In best-of-7 playoff series, the Los Angeles Dodgers have a 6-5 series record, a 1-1 Semifinals-round series record, and a 4-7 Game 1 record, while the Philadelphia Phillies have a 2-4 series record, a 1-0 Semifinals-round record, and a 4-2 Game 1 record. Series 1054 is the first best-of-7 meeting between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Philadelphia Phillies.
