Game 5 on Thursday, 19 April: Minnesota loses at Anaheim, 4-goals-1

SERIES NOTES:

After Game 5: The Anaheim Ducks hosted and defeated the Minnesota Wild 4-goals-1 to secure a 4-games-1 best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 995 victory over the Wild. Series 995 thus improves the Anaheim Ducks' best-of-7 NHL playoff series record to 7-4 overall and 4-1 in the Preliminary round (counting those series in which the Ducks were "Mighty"). Series 995 drops the Minnesota Wild's best-of-7 NHL playoff series record to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the Preliminary round. The win order for the victorious Anaheim Ducks in series 995 was WWWLW: Series 995 thus becomes the 13th best-of-7 NHL Preliminary round playoff series, the 40th best-of-7 NHL playoff series (all rounds), and the 67th best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series (all rounds) to follow this specific win order. Anaheim thus defeats Minnesota for the second time in a best-of-7 NHL playoff series, having previously vanquished the Wild in series 886 (in the 2003 NHL Semifinals).

After Game 4: The Minnesota Wild hosted and defeated the Anaheim Ducks 4-goals-1 to narrow Anaheim's best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 995 lead to 3-games-1. For the first time in four tries, Anaheim fails to sweep a best-of-7 NHL playoff series it had led 3-games-nil. When leading a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 3-games-1, the Anaheim Ducks (as the "Mighty" Ducks) had a 1-0 series record and an 0-1 Game 5 record. When trailing a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 3-games-1, the Minnesota Wild have a 2-0 series record and (thus) a 2-0 Game 5 record. The Minnesota comebacks occurred in consecutive series in 2003, over Colorado in the Preliminary round (series 879) and over Vancouver in the Quarterfinals (series 884).

After Game 3: With best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 995 having moved to St. Paul for Games 3-4, the Anaheim Ducks once again defeated the Minnesota Wild by a one-goal margin (2-goals-1). Anaheim thus takes a 3-games-nil series 995 lead. When up 3-games-nil in a best-of-7 NHL playoff series, the Anaheim Mighty Ducks had a 3-0 series record and a 3-0 Game 4 record -- perfect sweepers when Mighty. When trailing 3-games-nil, the Minnesota Wild had a 0-1 series record and a 0-1 Game 4 record. In each case was series 886 (the 2003 NHL Semifinals-round battle between Anaheim and Minnesota) part of those 3-games-nil records. Minnesota will now attempt to become the fourth team (in 254 MLB/NBA/NHL tries) to surmount a 3-games-nil series deficit.

After Game 2: The Anaheim Ducks again hosted and again defeated the Minnesota Wild, this time by a score of 3-goals-2 to take a 2-games-nil lead in best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 995. When leading a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 2-games-nil as the "Mighty" Ducks, Anaheim had a perfect 5-0 series record and a 3-2 Game 3 record. When trailing a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 2-games-nil, the Minnesota Wild have a 0-1 series record and a 0-1 Game 3 record, with both the series loss and the Game 3 loss occurring in series 886 vs. Anaheim in the 2003 NHL Semifinals. Anaheim thus improves its best-of-7 NHL playoff game record against Minnesota to 6-0. In the history of best-of-7 NHL playoffs from 1939 through 2006, teams such as Anaheim which win Games 1 and 2 by one goal each have a 33-4 (.892) series record; the last such team to lose a series in that situation was the San Jose Sharks in the 2006 NHL Quarterfinals (to the Edmonton Oilers, in series 967).

After Game 1: The Anaheim Ducks hosted and defeated the Minnesota Wild 2-goals-1 to take a 1-game-nil lead in best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 995. When leading a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 1-game-nil as the "Mighty" Ducks, Anaheim had a perfect 5-0 series record and a perfect 5-0 Game 2 record. When trailing a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 1-game-nil, the Minnesota Wild have a 1-1 series record and a 1-1 Game 2 record. In defeat, Minnesota has already scored as many goals against Anaheim as the Wild managed in all of best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 886 (in which the Wild managed one total goal as Anaheim swept them 4-games-nil in their 2003 NHL Semifinals series -- that one total goal is an NHL low for a best-of-7 NHL playoff series).

Pre-series assessment: In the 2006-07 regular season, Anaheim finished six points ahead of Minnesota. From 1905 through the 2006 MLB Finals, when NHL teams led their best-of-7 playoff series opponents by six regular-season points, they have posted a 16-8 (.667) best-of-7 series record in those series against those opponents. Best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 995 is the fourth best-of-7 playoff series for Minnesota, and the 11th for Anaheim. In best-of-7 playoff series, Minnesota has a 2-1 series record, a 1-0 Prelim-round series record, and a 1-2 Game 1 record, while Anaheim (as the "Mighty" Ducks) has a 6-4 series record, a 3-1 Prelim-round record, and a 5-5 Game 1 record. Series 995 is the second best-of-7 meeting between Minnesota and Anaheim: In best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 886, Anaheim limited Minnesota to a total of one goal (an NHL low for a best-of-7 playoff series) in the course of defeating the Wild in the 2003 NHL Semifinals.
