SERIES NOTES:

After Game 4: The New York Rangers hosted and defeated the Atlanta Thrashers 4-goals-2 in Game 4 of best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 992. New York thus wins series 992 in a sweep. The sweep is the third best-of-7 NHL playoff series sweep achieved by the New York Rangers, and is the first suffered by the Atlanta Thrashers in their first best-of-7 NHL playoff series. Atlanta NHL teams now have a best-of-7 playoff game record of 0-8. Series 992 thus becomes the 166th best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series sweep, the 97th best-of-7 NHL playoff series sweep, and the 20th best-of-7 NHL Preliminary-round playoff series sweep.

After Game 3: With best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 992 in Manhattan for Games 3-4, the New York Rangers shut out the Atlanta Thrashers 7-goals-nil to take a 3-games-nil series 992 lead. The shutout victory on home ice was the first in best-of-7 NHL playoff action for the Rangers since series 733 Game 4, when they whitewashed the New Jersey Devils 3-goals-nil in their 1997 NHL Quarterfinals series. The shutout was the most lopsided shutout victory on home ice by the Rangers in their best-of-7 playoffs history. When leading a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 3-games-nil, the New York Rangers have a series record of 4-0 and a Game 4 record of 2-2. Atlanta NHL teams are now 0-7 in best-of-7 NHL playoff games.

After Game 2: The New York Rangers again visited and defeated the Atlanta Thrashers, this time by a score of 2-goals-1, to seize a 2-games-nil lead in best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 992. The Rangers thus win the first two games of a best-of-7 NHL playoff series on the road for the first time since the 1973 NHL Quarterfinals (in series 263 against the Boston Bruins; the Rangers won in five games). When leading a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 2-games-nil, the New York Rangers have a series record of 8-1 with a six-series winning streak and a Game 3 record of 4-5. With the loss, Atlanta NHL teams fall to 0-6 in best-of-7 format NHL playoff games. The New York Rangers have won each of series 992 Games 1-2 on the road by one-goal margins: In the history of best-of-7 NHL playoff series from 1939 through 2006, teams winning Games 1-2 on the road by one goal each have a series record of 11-1 with a six-series winning streak.

After Game 1: The New York Rangers visited and defeated the Atlanta Thrashers 4-goals-3 to take a 1-game-nil lead in best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 992. When leading a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 1-game-nil, the New York Rangers have a series record of 14-9 with an active three-series winning streak, and a Game 2 record of 9-14. Series 992 is the first NHL playoff series for the Atlanta Thrashers; when trailing a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 1-game-nil, the Atlanta Flames had a series record of 0-1 and a Game 2 record of 0-1. With the series 992 Game 1 loss, the game record of Atlanta NHL teams falls to 0-5 in best-of-7 NHL playoff series. The series 992 Game 1 victory by the Rangers is the first for New York since series 736 Game 2, in which the Rangers defeated the Philadelphia Flyers in their 1997 NHL Semifinals series; the win breaks a seven-game losing streak by the Rangers in best-of-7 format playoff games.

Pre-series assessment: In the 2006-07 regular season, Atlanta finished three points ahead of the New York Rangers. From 1905 through the 2006 MLB Finals, when NHL teams led their best-of-7 playoff series opponents by three regular-season points, they have posted an 11-12 (.478) best-of-7 series record in those series against those opponents. Best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 992 is the 54th best-of-7 playoff series for the New York Rangers, and the first for the Atlanta Thrashers. In best-of-7 playoff series, the New York Rangers have a 22-31 series record, a 6-4 Prelim-round series record, and a 23-30 Game 1 record. Series 992 is the first best-of-7 meeting between the New York Rangers and Atlanta. The predecessors to the Thrashers in the NHL in Atlanta, the Atlanta Flames, were swept in their only best-of-7 NHL playoff series (best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 279, against the Philadelphia Flyers in the 1974 NHL Quarterfinals).
