2007 MLB Semifinals round - Series 1021.
Colorado Rockies vs Arizona Diamondbacks

Schedule and 2007 Results
Regular Season Records: Arizona 90-72, Colorado 90-73
Game 1 on Thursday, 11 October: Colorado wins at Arizona, 5-runs-1
Game 2 on Friday, 12 October: Colorado wins at Arizona, 3-runs-2 (11 innings)
Game 3 on Sunday, 14 October: Arizona loses at Colorado, 4-runs-1
Game 4 on Monday, 15 October: Arizona loses at Colorado, 6-runs-4

SERIES NOTES:

After Game 4: The Colorado Rockies defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-runs-4 to sweep best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 1021 in four games. The best-of-7 series sweep is the fifth in MLB Semifinals history, the 24th in MLB history (all rounds), and the 171st in MLB/NBA/NHL history (all rounds). The sweep is the first accomplished by the Colorado Rockies, and the first suffered by the Arizona Diamondbacks. The 2007 Colorado Rockies thus join the MLB Boston Braves (in series 10 - the 1914 World Series), MLB Baltimore Orioles (in series 179 - the 1966 World Series), NHL Dallas Stars (in series 658, in the 1994 NHL Preliminary round), and NHL Pittsburgh Penguins (in series 220, in the 1970 NHL Quarterfinals) among teams to sweep their first-ever best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series. The six-run bottom of the fourth inning by Colorado is the highest-scoring bottom of the fourth inning in best-of-7 MLB playoff games since the Cardinals in St. Louis plated six in the bottom of the fourth inning of series 500 (1987 World Series) Game 4, and is the highest-scoring bottom of the fourth inning in best-of-7 MLB Semifinals history. Colorado held Arizona to eight total runs in series 1021. That is the lowest run total by one team in a best-of-7 MLB playoff series since series 696, in which the Atlanta Braves held the Cincinnati Reds to five total runs while sweeping the 1995 National League Championship Series.

After Game 3: With best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 1021 in Denver for Games 3-5, the host Colorado Rockies defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 4-runs-1 to take a 3-games-nil series lead. The 2007 MLB Arizona Diamondbacks thus become the 262nd MLB/NBA/NHL team to face a 3-games-nil deficit in a best-of-7 playoff series. Since series 936, in which the Boston Red Sox surmounted a 3-games-nil deficit to defeat the New York Yankees in the 2004 American League Championship Series, MLB/NBA/NHL teams with 3-games-nil leads have a 22-0 series record. In theory, a team trailing a best-of-7 playoff series 3-games-nil but with a perfect 50% chance of winning each remaining series game has a 1/16 or 6.25% chance of winning Games 4-7 and the series.

After Game 2: It took 11 innings, but the Colorado Rockies defeated the Diamondbacks in Arizona 3-runs-2 to take a 2-games-nil lead in best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 1021. Never before has Colorado led (or Arizona trailed) a best-of-7 MLB playoff series 2-games-nil. The win by Colorado in Arizona was the first 11+ inning win by a road team in a best-of-7 MLB playoff game since series 904 Game 3, in which the Chicago Cubs defeated the Marlins in Florida 5-runs-4 in 11 innings in their 2003 National League Championship Series. In the history of best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL Semifinals-round series, teams (such as the Colorado Rockies) that win Games 1-2 on the road have a 29-1 series record. The one loss in that situation was sustained by the NHL Boston Bruins in series 53, which succumbed to the Detroit Red Wings in their 1945 NHL Semifinals series - a series which followed a 2-2-1-1-1 site format, unlike the 2-3-2 site format in effect for series 1021. The 1945 NHL Detroit Red Wings thus offer a favorable precedent (however strained) for the 2007 MLB Arizona Diamondbacks. In the history of best-of-7 MLB series (all rounds), teams that win Games 1-2 on the road have a 19-3 series record: The three losses were sustained by the 1985 St. Louis Cardinals (in series 458 against the Kansas City Royals in the World Series), the 1986 Boston Red Sox (in series 475 against the New York Mets in the World Series), and the 1996 Atlanta Braves (in series 722 against the New York Yankees in the World Series).

After Game 1: The Colorado Rockies visited and defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-runs-1 to take a 1-game-nil lead in best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 1021. The Colorado Rockies thus take their first 1-game-nil lead in a best-of-7 MLB playoff series; Arizona trails a best-of-7 MLB playoff series 1-game-nil for the first time in three such series (having won Game 1 in both of their previous best-of-7 MLB playoff series, in 2001). The last MLB team to win Game 1 of a best-of-7 MLB Semifinals series on the road was the Detroit Tigers in the 2006 American League Championship Series, in Oakland over the Athletics to open series 987: Ironically the final score of that game was also 5-runs-1. Detroit swept Oakland in four games to win series 987.

Pre-series assessment: In the 2007 regular season, Arizona at 90-72 finished 0.5 games ahead of Colorado (90-73). Best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 1021 thus becomes the first best-of-7 MLB playoff series in which one contestant led the other by one-half of a regular season game (Colorado's 163rd game was a one-game playoff, which MLB as of October 2007 considered part of the 2007 regular-season standings). Best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 1021 is the third best-of-7 playoff series for the Arizona Diamondbacks, and the first for the Colorado Rockies. In best-of-7 MLB playoff series, the Arizona Diamondbacks have a 2-0 series record, a 1-0 Semifinals-round series record, and a 2-0 Game 1 record. Series 1021 is the first best-of-7 meeting between Colorado and Arizona. The combined best-of-7 MLB playoff series experience of the series 1021 contestants - two such series (both by Arizona, in 2001) - is the least such combined experience since series 695 (the 1995 American League Championship Series), in which the Cleveland Indians (two series' experience [in series 71 - the 1948 World Series; in series 101 - the 1954 World Series]) defeated the Seattle Mariners (none).
