SERIES NOTES:

After Game 5: The Edmonton Oilers visited and defeated the Anaheim Mighty Ducks 2-goals-1 to complete a 4-games-1 victory in best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 970. The series 970 victory improves the Edmonton Oilers' best-of-7 NHL playoff series record to 29-12. The series 970 loss drops the Anaheim Mighty Ducks' best-of-7 NHL playoff series record to 6-4. The win order for the victorious Edmonton Oilers in series 970 was WWWLW: Series 970 thus becomes the 11th NHL Semifinals series, the 39th NHL series and the fourth in 2006 alone (all rounds), and the 66th MLB/NBA/NHL series (all rounds) to follow this win order. The series 970 loss marks the last best-of-7 NHL playoff appearance for the "Anaheim Mighty Ducks." Beginning in the 2006-07 NHL regular season, the plan is for this franchise to be known as the "Anaheim Ducks." As is the custom for this operation, totals for the "Anaheim Ducks" in 2007 and beyond will henceforth be tallied separately from those for the predecessor "Anaheim Mighty Ducks."

After Game 4: The Anaheim Mighty Ducks visited and defeated the Edmonton Oilers 6-goals-3 to reduce the Edmonton best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 970 lead to 3-games-1. Anaheim now trails a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 3-games-1 for the first time in franchise history. When leading a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 3-games-1, the Edmonton Oilers have a series record of 13-1. The sole loss was to the neighbor of the Anaheim Mighty Ducks - the Los Angeles Kings - in series 533 (in the 1989 NHL Preliminary round).

After Game 3: With best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 970 in Edmonton for Games 3-4, the host Oilers defeated the Anaheim Mighty Ducks 5-goals-4 to take a 3-games-nil series 970 lead. When leading a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 3-games-nil, the Edmonton Oilers have a series record of 8-0, and a Game 4 record of 7-1 with a seven-Game 4-winning streak. When trailing three-games-nil, the Anaheim Mighty Ducks have a series record of 0-2 and a Game 4 record of 0-2. The Edmonton Oilers' 2006 NHL playoffs game winning streak has reached seven games with the series 970 Game 3 victory over Anaheim.

After Game 2: Once again, the Edmonton Oilers visited and defeated the Anaheim Mighty Ducks 3-goals-1. Edmonton thus takes a 2-games-nil lead in best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 970. When leading a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 2-games-nil, the Edmonton Oilers have a 13-0 series record with seven sweeps. When trailing a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 2-games-nil, the Anaheim Mighty Ducks have a 0-3 series record, with two of those losses by way of sweeps. The Edmonton Oilers have now won six consecutive 2006 NHL playoff games. Teams such as Edmonton that take a 2-games-nil lead in a best-of-7 NHL Semifinals series have a 60-7 (.896) series record with a nine-series winning streak.

After Game 1: The Edmonton Oilers visited and defeated the Anaheim Mighty Ducks 3-goals-1 to take a 1-game-nil lead in best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 970. When leading a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 1-game-nil, the Edmonton Oilers have a 20-2 (.909) series record - percentage-wise, the best record among MLB/NBA/NHL teams with ten or more best-of-7 series decisions. When trailing a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 1-games-nil, the Anaheim Mighty Ducks have a 1-3 series record. In the history of best-of-7 NHL playoff series from 1939 through the 2006 NHL Quarterfinals, teams winning Game 1 by a 3-goals-1 score (such as Edmonton) have a 37-11 (.771) series record.

Pre-series assessment: In the 2005-06 NHL regular season, the Anaheim Mighty Ducks finished three points ahead of the Edmonton Oilers. From 1905 through the 2006 NHL Quarterfinals, when NHL teams led their best-of-7 playoff series opponents by three regular-season points, they have posted an 11-11 (.500) best-of-7 series record in those series against those opponents. Best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 970 is the 41st best-of-7 NHL playoff series for Edmonton, and the tenth for Anaheim. In best-of-7 playoff series, Edmonton has a 28-12 series record, a 6-2 Semifinals-round series record (with a two-series losing streak), and a 22-18 Game 1 record, while Anaheim has a 6-3 series record, a 1-0 Semifinals-round record, and a 5-4 Game 1 record. Series 970 is the first best-of-7 NHL playoff series meeting between Edmonton and Anaheim.
