Colorado Avalanche vs Anaheim Mighty Ducks

Schedule and 2005-06 Results
Regular Season Records: Anaheim 43-27-12=98pts, Colorado 43-30-9=95pts
Game 1 on Friday, 05 May: Colorado loses at Anaheim, 5-goals-nil
Game 2 on Sunday, 07 May: Colorado loses at Anaheim, 3-goals-nil
Game 3 on Tuesday, 09 May: Anaheim wins at Colorado, 4-goals-3 (OT)
Game 4 on Thursday, 11 May: Anaheim wins at Colorado, 4-goals-1

SERIES NOTES:

After Game 4: The Anaheim Mighty Ducks visited and defeated the Colorado Avalanche 4-goals-1, thus achieving a four-game sweep of best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 968. Anaheim thus improves its best-of-7 NHL playoff series record to 6-3, while that for Colorado falls to 18-8. Series 968 becomes the 35th NHL Quarterfinals series, the 96th NHL series (all rounds), and the 164th MLB/NBA/NHL series (all rounds) to end in a four-game-sweep. The Colorado Avalanche did not score a single goal on the road in series 968. Colorado thus becomes the sixth NHL team to be shut out on the road during a best-of-7 NHL playoff series, and the first since the Philadelphia Flyers in series 849 (against the Ottawa Senators in the 2002 NHL Preliminary round).

After Game 3: The Anaheim Mighty Ducks visited and defeated the Colorado Avalanche 4-goals-3 in overtime, thus taking a 3-games-nil lead in best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 968. When leading a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 3-games-nil, the Anaheim Mighty Ducks have a 2-0 series record and a 2-0 Game 4 record. When trailing a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 3-games-nil, the Colorado Avalanche have a 0-1 series record, having lost series 917 to the San Jose Sharks in six games in the 2004 NHL Quarterfinals.

After Game 2: The Anaheim Mighty Ducks hosted and again shut out the Colorado Avalanche, this time 3-goals-nil, to take a 2-games-nil lead in best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 968. When leading a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 2-games-nil, the Anaheim Mighty Ducks have a series record of 4-0. When trailing a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 2-games-nil, the Colorado Avalanche have a series record of 1-1. The Anaheim Mighty Ducks now have a 5-0 Game 2 record upon winning Game 1 of a best-of-7 NHL playoff series. In the history of best-of-7 NHL playoff series since 1939, teams winning Games 1-2 by shutout have a perfect 9-0 series record.

After Game 1: The Anaheim Mighty Ducks hosted and defeated the Colorado Avalanche 5-goals-nil to take a 1-game-nil lead in best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 968. When leading a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 1-game-nil, the Anaheim Mighty Ducks have a perfect series record of 4-0. When trailing a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 1-game-nil, the Colorado Avalanche have a series record of 4-4 with a three-series losing streak. The 5-goals-nil shutout home ice win for Anaheim was the most lopsided home ice shutout victory in a best-of-7 NHL playoff Game 1 since series 837 Game 1, in which, ironically, the Avalanche in Colorado whitewashed the New Jersey Devils 5-goals-nil in the 2001 NHL Finals (which Colorado would ultimately win for the 2001 NHL Stanley Cup championship).

Pre-series assessment: In the 2005-06 regular season, Anaheim finished three points ahead of Colorado. From 1939 through the 2005-06 NHL Preliminary round, when NHL teams led their best-of-7 playoff series opponents by three regular-season points, they have posted a 10-10 (.500) best-of-7 series record in those series against those opponents. MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 series 968 is the 26th best-of-7 playoff series for Colorado, and the ninth for Anaheim. In best-of-7 playoff series, Colorado has a 18-7 series record, a 6-1 Quarterfinals-round series record, and a 17-8 Game 1 record, while Anaheim has a 5-3 series record, a 1-1 Quarterfinals-round record, and a 4-4 Game 1 record. Series 968 is the first best-of-7 meeting between Colorado and Anaheim.
