Game 6 on Tuesday, 20 June: Miami wins at Dallas, 95-pts-92

SERIES NOTES:

After Game 6: The Miami Heat visited and defeted the Dallas Mavericks 95-pts-92 to win Game 6 of the 2006 NBA Finals (best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 986). The Miami Heat thus win the 2006 NBA championship, 4-games-2. With the win, the Miami Heat improve their best-of-7 NBA playoff series record to 8-4, while that for the Dallas Mavericks falls to 7-9. The win order for the victorious Miami Heat was LLWWWW: Series 986 thus becomes the second NBA Finals series, the sixth NBA series (all rounds), and the 30th MLB/NBA/NHL series (all rounds) to follow this win order. Series 986 Game 6 was the 89th and last game of the 2006 NBA playoff season. In best-of-7 NBA Finals, teams trailing 2-games-nil (such as Miami) had a 2-25 series record with a 12-series losing streak.

After Game 5: Surmounting an eight-point halftime deficit, the Miami Heat defeated the Dallas Mavericks in Miami 101-pts-100 in the first overtime to take a 3-games-2 lead in best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 986 (the 2006 NBA Finals). In the history of best-of-7 NBA playoff games from 1947 through series 986 Game 4, teams trailing a game by eight points at halftime irrespective of site (such as Miami) had a 28-77 (.267) game record. When leading a best-of-7 NBA playoff series 3-games-2, the Miami Heat have a series record of 3-2; when trailing a best-of-7 NBA playoff series 3-games-2, the Dallas Mavericks have a series record of 0-4. MLB/NBA/NHL teams opening a best-of-7 playoff series with a win/site order of LLWWW @ VVHHH (such as Miami) are on a four-series losing streak (series 500: St. Louis Cardinals lost to Minnesota Twins in 1987 MLB Finals; series 600: Atlanta Braves lost to Minnesota Twins in 1991 MLB Finals; series 847: New York Yankees lost to Arizona Diamondbacks in 2001 MLB Finals; series 937: Houston Astros lost to St. Louis Cardinals in 2004 MLB Semifinals). The only previous best-of-7 NBA playoff series to follow a LLWWW @ VVHHH win/site order was series 105, in which the Fort Wayne Pistons posted that win/site order against the Syracuse Nationals in the 1955 NBA Finals - Fort Wayne then lost Games 6-7 in Syracuse to lose the series in seven games.

After Game 4: The Miami Heat hosted and defeated the Dallas Mavericks 98-pts-74 to tie best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 986 (the 2006 NBA Finals) at 2-games-all. When tied 2-games-all in a best-of-7 NBA playoff series, the Dallas Mavericks have a 4-3 series record, while the Miami Heat have a 2-3 series record. In the fourth quarter of series 986 Game 4, the Dallas Mavericks tallied only seven points. That is the lowest quarter point total in a best-of-7 NBA Finals series since 1954: In the third quarter of series 100 Game 6, the Minneapolis Lakers scored only six points against the Syracuse Nationals in their 1954 NBA Finals series. The Miami Heat won Game 4 by 24 points over Dallas. In the history of best-of-7 NBA playoff series from 1947 through the 2006 NBA Semifinals, teams winning a Game 4 by 20+ points to tie a best-of-7 series at 2-games-all have a series record of 4-7 (.364) with a five-series losing streak. The last series winner under these circumstances, ironically, was the Dallas Mavericks in series 519: Dallas won Game 4 over the Denver Nuggets by 21 points (124-pts-103) to tie their 1988 NBA Quarterfinals series at 2-games-all, then won Games 5 and 6 to win the series. As such, the 1988 Dallas Mavericks set a favorable precedent for the 2006 Miami Heat ... against the 2006 Dallas Mavericks.

After Game 3: Trailing by nine points after three quarters, the Miami Heat rallied at home to defeat the Dallas Mavericks 98-pts-96, thereby cutting the Dallas best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 986 lead to 2-games-1. When leading a best-of-7 NBA playoff series 2-games-1, the Dallas Mavericks have a series record of 3-0. When trailing a best-of-7 NBA playoff series 2-games-1, the Miami Heat have a series record of 1-1. In the history of best-of-7 NBA playoff games, teams down by nine points after three quarters irrespective of site (such as Miami) had only an 11-91 (.108) game record. Teams leading the NBA Finals 2-games-1 (such as Dallas) are on a 17-series winning streak - the last NBA team to lead the Finals 2-games-1 but lose the series was the 1984 Los Angeles Lakers (to the Boston Celtics in series 440).

After Game 2: The Dallas Mavericks hosted and defeated the Miami Heat 99-pts-85 to take a 2-games-nil lead in best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 986, the 2006 NBA Finals. When leading a best-of-7 NBA playoff series 2-games-nil, the Dallas Mavericks have a series record of 2-0. When trailing a best-of-7 NBA playoff series 2-games-nil, the Miami Heat have a series record of 0-2. Dallas led series 986 Game 2 by 16 points at halftime. In the 1989-game history of best-of-7 NBA playoff games from 1947 through 2006 Finals Game 1, teams leading by 16 points at the half had a perfect 30-0 game record (which is now 31-0 in the wake of the Dallas victory). In the history of best-of-7 NBA Finals series, teams leading 2-games-nil (such as Dallas) have a 25-2 Finals record with a 12-series winning streak - the last team to lead the Finals 2-games-nil but lose: the Philadelphia 76ers, to the Portland Trailblazers in series 335 (the 1977 NBA Finals).

After Game 1: The Dallas Mavericks hosted and defeated the Miami Heat 90-pts-80 to take a 1-game-nil lead in best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 986, the 2006 NBA Finals. When leading a best-of-7 NBA playoff series 1-game-nil, the Dallas Mavericks have a series record of 2-1. When trailing a best-of-7 NBA playoff series 1-game-nil, the Miami Heat have a series record of 2-3, with the two wins sandwiching the three defeats. Series 986 Game 1 is the first best-of-7 NBA playoff game to end in a final score of 90-pts-80. In best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL Finals, the city with the most teams to win a Game 1 by ten runs/points/goals is Milwaukee: the NBA Bucks won series 245 Game 1 by ten points in the 1971 NBA Finals; the MLB Brewers won series 411 Game 1 by ten runs in the 1982 World Series.

Pre-series assessment: In the 2005-06 regular season, the Dallas Mavericks finished eight games ahead of the Miami Heat. From 1947 through the 2006 NBA Semifinals, when NBA teams led their best-of-7 playoff series opponents by eight regular-season games, they have posted an 18-4 (.818) best-of-7 series record in those series against those opponents, with a 14-series winning streak. Best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 986 is the 12th best-of-7 NBA playoff series for the Miami Heat, and the 16th for the Dallas Mavericks. In best-of-7 NBA playoff series, Miami has a 7-4 series record, a 0-0 Finals-round series record, and a 6-5 Game 1 record, while Dallas has a 7-8 series record, a 0-0 Finals-round record, and a 3-12 Game 1 record. Series 986 is the first best-of-7 NBA playoff series meeting between Miami and Dallas.
