2006 NBA Preliminary round - Series 979.
Memphis Grizzlies vs Dallas Mavericks

Schedule and 2005-06 Results
Regular Season Records: Dallas 60-22, Memphis 49-33
Game 1 on Sunday, 23 April: Memphis loses at Dallas, 103-pts-93
Game 2 on Wednesday, 26 April: Memphis loses at Dallas, 94-pts-79
Game 3 on Saturday, 29 April: Dallas wins at Memphis, 94-pts-89 (OT)
Game 4 on Monday, 01 May: Dallas wins at Memphis, 102-pts-76

SERIES NOTES:

After Game 4: By a 26-point margin of victory that is the third-largest victory margin in the final game (Game 4) of a four-game sweep, the Dallas Mavericks visited and defeated the Memphis Grizzlies 102-pts-76 to sweep best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 979. The four-game sweep is the sixth in the best-of-7 NBA Preliminary round, the 48th in best-of-7 NBA playoff series (all rounds), and the 163rd in best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series (all rounds). With the series 979 victory, the Dallas Mavericks improved their best-of-7 NBA playoff series record to 5-8, while that for the hapless Memphis Grizzlies falls to 0-3. In best-of-7 NBA playoff series, the game record of the Memphis Grizzlies is 0-12 after series 979 -- an MLB/NBA/NHL low, far and away.

After Game 3: The Dallas Mavericks visited and defeated the Memphis Grizzlies 94-pts-89 in overtime to take a 3-games-nil lead in best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 979. The Memphis Grizzlies are thus now 0-11 in best-of-7 NBA playoff series games. When leading a best-of-7 NBA playoff series 3-games-nil, the Dallas Mavericks have a series record of 1-0 (that win, however, occurred in series 894 vs. the Portland Trailblazers in the 2003 NBA Preliminary round ... and required the full seven games). When trailing a best-of-7 NBA playoff series 3-games-nil, the Memphis Grizzlies have a series record of 0-2.

After Game 2: With a 94-pts-79 victory in Game 2 of best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 979, the Dallas Mavericks thus take a 2-games-nil series 979 lead over the visiting Memphis Grizzlies. Series 979 shifts to Memphis for Games 3-4. When leading an NBA best-of-7 playoff series 2-games-nil, the Dallas Mavericks have a series record of 1-0; when trailing 2-games-nil, the Memphis Grizzlies have a series record of 0-2. The Game 2 loss drops the Memphis Grizzlies' best-of-7 NBA playoff series all-time game record to an MLB/NBA/NHL-worst 0-10. In the history of best-of-7 NBA playoff series from 1947 through 2005, teams winning Games 1 and 2 each by double-digit margins of victory (such as the Dallas Mavericks) have a series record of 53-2 (.964).

After Game 1: The Dallas Mavericks hosted and defeated the Memphis Grizzlies 103-pts-93 to take a 1-game-nil lead in best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 979. When leading a best-of-7 NBA playoff series 1-game-nil, the Dallas Mavericks sport a series record of 1-1. When trailing a best-of-7 NBA playoff series record 1-game-nil, the Memphis Grizzlies have a 0-2 series record. The series 979 Game 1 loss to Dallas is the ninth loss by the Memphis Grizzlies in their ninth best-of-7 format NBA playoff game. Memphis thus holds the MLB/NBA/NHL record for most game losses without a win in best-of-7 format playoff competition.

Pre-series assessment: In the 2005-06 regular season, Dallas finished 11 games ahead of Memphis. Through the 2005 MLB Finals, when NBA teams led their best-of-7 playoff series opponents by 11 regular-season games, they have posted a 14-4 (.778) best-of-7 series record in those series against those opponents. MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 series 979 is the third best-of-7 NBA playoff series for Memphis, and the 13th for Dallas. In best-of-7 NBA playoff series, Memphis has a 0-2 series record, a 0-2 Prelim-round series record, and a 0-2 Game 1 record, while Dallas has a 4-8 series record, a 2-1 Prelim-round record, and a 2-10 Game 1 record. Series 979 is the first NBA best-of-7 playoff meeting between Memphis and Dallas.
