SERIES NOTES:

After Game 7: The Detroit Pistons visited and defeated the Miami Heat 88-pts-82 to win MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 951. With the win, the Detroit Pistons improve their best-of-7 NBA playoff series record to 19-11 (all rounds) and 5-5 (NBA Semifinals). With the loss, the Miami Heat see their best-of-7 NBA playoff series record fall to 4-4 (all rounds) and 0-2 (NBA Semifinals). The victorious Detroit Pistons posted a series 951 win order of WLLWLWW: Series 951 thus becomes the ninth MLB/NBA/NHL series (all rounds), the fifth NBA series (all rounds), and the second NBA Semifinals series to follow this win order. With the series 951 victory, the Detroit Pistons now have a seven-series winning streak after leading a best-of-7 playoff series 1-game-nil, a six-series winning streak after being tied 1-game-all, a 5-1 series record after their last six series trailing 2-games-1, an eight-series winning streak after being tied 2-games-all, and a three-series winning streak after trailing 3-games-2. With the victories by Detroit in series 951 and San Antonio in series 952, teams without the home-court advantage have won both NBA Semifinals series for the second consecutive season, but for only the third time ever (1978) since the best-of-7 format was adopted for the NBA Semifinals series.

After Game 6: The Detroit Pistons hosted and defeated the Miami Heat 91-pts-66 to force MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 951 to its seventh and decisive game. That 25-point margin of victory for the Pistons is the largest in an NBA Semifinals Game 6 since series 718, when the Utah Jazz hosted and defeated the Seattle Supersonics 118-pts-83. In the history of best-of-7 NBA playoffs from 1947 through the 2005 NBA Quarterfinals, when a team (such as the Detroit Pistons) trailed 3-games-2 but won Game 6 by 25 points or more, its Game 7 record was 1-6. The sole winner: The Washington Bullets in series 350, which topped the Seattle Supersonics in the 1978 NBA Finals. The Game 7 record of the Detroit Pistons is 3-3; that of the Miami Heat is 2-1. MLB/NBA/NHL teams with an LWWLWL win order through six games of a best-of-7 playoff series (such as Miami) are on a five-series winning streak. In the history of best-of-7 NBA playoff series from 1947 through the 2005 NBA Quarterfinals, home teams have a 74-16 (.822) Game 7 record.

After Game 5: The Miami Heat hosted and defeated the Detroit Pistons 88-pts-76 in MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 951 Game 5, thereby taking a 3-games-2 series 951 lead. When leading an NBA best-of-7 playoff series 3-games-2, the Miami Heat have a 1-1 series record and a 0-2 Game 6 record. When trailing an NBA best-of-7 playoff series 3-games-2, the Detroit Pistons have a 2-6 series record (but an active two-series winning streak) and a 2-6 Game 6 record. Teams with a win/site order of LWWLW @ HHVVH in an NBA best-of-7 playoff series (all rounds) from 1947 through the 2005 NBA Quarterfinals have a 7-1 series record. The sole loser: The Sacramento Kings in series 868 (in the 2002 NBA Semifinals), which lost to the Los Angeles Lakers. Those 2002 Lakers thus set a favorable precedent for the 2005 Detroit Pistons against the 2005 Miami Heat.

After Game 4: Improving their Game 4 record to 9-3 when trailing a best-of-7 NBA playoff series 2-games-1, the Detroit Pistons hosted and defeated the Miami Heat 106-pts-96 in MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 951 Game 4. Series 951 is now tied 2-games-all. When tied 2-games-all in a best-of-7 NBA playoff series, the Detroit Pistons have a series record of 8-6 (with an active seven-series winning streak) and a Game 5 record of 8-6, while the Miami Heat have a series record of 1-2 and a Game 5 record of 2-1.

After Game 3: The Miami Heat defeated the Pistons in Detroit 113-pts-104 to take a 2-games-1 lead in MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 951. When leading a best-of-7 NBA playoff series 2-games-1, the Miami Heat have a 1-1 series record and a 0-2 Game 4 record. When trailing a best-of-7 NBA playoff series 2-games-1, the Detroit Pistons have a 4-7 series record (but a 4-1 series record in their last five such series) and an 8-3 Game 4 record. In the history of best-of-7 NBA playoff series from 1947 through the 2005 NBA Quarterfinals (all rounds), teams that lose Game 1 but win Game 2 at home and win Game 3 on the road (as the Miami Heat have done) have a 17-3 series record. The three NBA teams to lose a series despite such an advantage were the Boston Celtics (in series 592, to the Detroit Pistons in the 1991 NBA Quarterfinals), the Sacramento Kings (in series 868, to the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2002 NBA Semifinals), and the Minnesota Timberwolves (in series 895, also to the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2003 NBA Preliminary round). The 1991 Detroit Pistons in series 592 thus provide a favorable precedent for their 2005 counterparts in series 951.

After Game 2: Tying MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 951 at 1-game-all, the Miami Heat defeated the Detroit Pistons 92-pts-86 in series 951 Game 2. When tied 1-game-all in a best-of-7 NBA playoff series, the Detroit Pistons have an 11-5 series record (with an active five-series winning streak) and an 8-8 Game 3 record, while the Miami Heat have a 1-1 series record and a 1-1 Game 3 record.

After Game 1: The Detroit Pistons visited and defeated the Miami Heat 90-pts-81, thus ending the eight-game post-season-2005 winning streak of the Heat, and thus taking a 1-game-nil MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 series 951 lead. When leading a best-of-7 NBA playoff series 1-game-nil, the Detroit Pistons have a 15-3 series record with an active six-series winning streak, and a 7-11 Game 2 record. When trailing a best-of-7 NBA playoff series 1-game-nil, the Miami Heat have a 1-2 series record and a 1-2 Game 2 record. With the 2005 NBA Semifinals Game 1 victories by San Antonio and Detroit, the road team has won both NBA Semifinals Game 1s for only the fifth time in best-of-7 NBA history (2003, 1981, 1980, 1972).

Pre-series assessment: In the 2004-05 regular season, Miami finished five games ahead of Detroit. From 1947 through the 2005 NBA Quarterfinals, when NBA teams led their best-of-7 playoff series opponents by five regular-season games, they have posted a 19-7 (.731) best-of-7 series record in those series against those opponents, with an active six-series winning streak. MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 series 951 is the 30th best-of-7 playoff series for Detroit, and the eighth for Miami. In best-of-7 NBA playoff series, Detroit has an 18-11 series record, a 4-5 Semifinals-round series record, and an 18-11 Game 1 record, while Miami has a 4-3 series record, a 0-1 Semifinals-round record, and a 4-3 Game 1 record. Series 951 is the first best-of-7 NBA meeting between the Detroit Pistons and the Miami Heat.
