2005 MLB Semifinals round - Series 954.
Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim vs Chicago White Sox

Schedule and 2005 Results
Regular Season Records: Chicago White Sox 99-63, L.A. Angels of Anaheim 95-67
Game 1 on Tuesday, 11 October: L.A. Angels of Anaheim wins at Chicago White Sox, 3-runs-2
Game 2 on Wednesday, 12 October: L.A. Angels of Anaheim loses at Chicago White Sox, 2-runs-1
Game 3 on Friday, 14 October: Chicago White Sox wins at L.A. Angels of Anaheim, 5-runs-2
Game 4 on Saturday, 15 October: Chicago White Sox wins at L.A. Angels of Anaheim, 8-runs-2
Game 5 on Sunday, 16 October: Chicago White Sox wins at L.A. Angels of Anaheim, 6-runs-3

SERIES NOTES:

After Game 5: The Chicago White Sox once again visited and defeated the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, this time 6-runs-3. Chicago thus wins best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 954, 4-games-1. The Chicago White Sox improve their overall best-of-7 MLB playoff series record to 3-2, and their best-of-7 MLB Semifinals record to 1-1. The California Angels/Anaheim Angels/Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim see their overall best-of-7 MLB playoff series record fall to 2-2 (0-1 as the "Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim"), and their best-of-7 MLB Semifinals series record fall to 1-2 (0-1 as the "Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim"). The win order for the victorious Chicago White Sox was LWWWW. Series 954 thus becomes the 45th best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series, the lucky 13th best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL Semifinals-round series, the sixth best-of-7 MLB playoff series, and the second best-of-7 MLB Semifinals-round series to follow this win order. Ironically, the only other MLB Semifinals-round series to follow the LWWWW win order was series 870, won in 2002 by the just-vanquished (and just-renamed) Anaheim Angels. The Chicago White Sox thus win a berth in series 956 (the 2005 MLB Finals or "World Series"); their last World Series berth was in 1959, and their last best-of-7 format World Series victory was in 1917. In winning series 954, the Chicago White Sox won Games 3-5 on the road. In best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series history, they thus become the 14th team overall, the tenth team in MLB history (all rounds), and the fourth team in MLB Semifinals history to win Games 3-5 on the road.

After Game 4: The Chicago White Sox visited and defeated the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 8-runs-2 to take a 3-games-1 best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 954 lead. Ironically, the last MLB team to win a best-of-7 playoff series Game 4 by six or more runs was the Anaheim Angels (in series 870 vs. the Minnesota Twins in the 2002 MLB Semifinals). Series 954 is the first in which the Chicago White Sox have held a 3-games-1 best-of-7 MLB playoff series lead; it is also the first in which the Angels have faced a 3-games-1 best-of-7 MLB playoff series deficit. Since the beginning of best-of-7 MLB Semifinals play in 1985, teams that lose Game 1 but win Games 2-4 of a best-of-7 MLB Semifinals series have only a 1-6 Game 5 record. The sole winner? Ironically, the Anaheim Angels (vs. Minnesota in series 870, in the 2002 MLB Semifinals). The 2002 Angels thus set the only favorable Game 5 precedent for the 2005 White Sox against the 2005 Angels. From 1905 through 2004, teams that lose Game 1 but win Game 2 at home and win Games 3-4 on the road (such as the Chicago White Sox) have a best-of-7 Semifinals-round MLB/NBA/NHL Game 5 record of 7-9 ... with an active (and inexplicable) nine-Game-5 losing streak.

After Game 3: With the site of best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 954 having shifted to Anaheim, the Chicago White Sox defeated the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 5-runs-2 to take a 2-games-1 series 954 lead. The Angels thus now trail a best-of-7 MLB playoff series 2-games-1 for the first time ever. When leading a best-of-7 MLB playoff series 2-games-1, the Chicago White Sox have a perfect 2-0 series record ... and a perfect 0-2 Game 4 record. In the history of best-of-7 MLB Semifinals playoff series from 1985 through 2004, teams leading 2-games-1 have a 9-1 series record in the last ten such series (only the Chicago Cubs, in series 904 in the 2003 MLB Semifinals vs. the Florida Marlins, have lost a series in this situation).

After Game 2: The Chicago White Sox hosted and defeated the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 2-runs-1 to knot best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 954 at 1-game-all. In all three of the Angels' previous best-of-7 playoff series (as the California Angels and as the Anaheim Angels), they have been tied 1-game-all after the first two games. Their series record is 2-1; their Game 3 record is a perfect 3-0. When tied 1-game-all in a best-of-7 playoff series, the Chicago White Sox have a corresponding 1-1 series record and a 1-1 Game 3 record. Series 954 has become the tenth best-of-7 MLB playoff series to be tied 1-game-all in the wake of two one-run decisions. In the previous nine such series, the team winning Game 2 (such as Chicago in series 954) has a 5-4 series record and an active three-series winning streak.

After Game 1: The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim visited and defeated the Chicago White Sox 3-runs-2 to take a 1-game-nil best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 954 lead. When leading an MLB best-of-7 playoff series 1-game-nil, the Angels (in their various incarnations) have a 0-1 series record and a 0-1 Game 2 record. When trailing an MLB best-of-7 playoff series 1-game-nil, the Chicago White Sox also have a 0-1 series record and a 0-1 Game 2 record. In the history of best-of-7 MLB playoff series, when a team wins Game 1 by a one run margin, its series record is 31-19 (.620) and its Game 2 record is 19-31 (.380); when a team wins Game 1 by a 3-runs-2 final score, its series record is 8-3.

Pre-series assessment: In the 2005 regular season, the Chicago White Sox finished four games ahead of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. From 1905 through 2004, when MLB teams led their best-of-7 playoff series opponents by four regular-season games, they have posted a 5-4 (.556) best-of-7 series record in those series against those opponents. MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 series 954 is the first best-of-7 playoff series for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (which made previous best-of-7 MLB playoff appearances as the California Angels in series 473 [in the 1986 MLB Semifinals], and as the Anaheim Angels in series 870 and 872 [in the 2002 MLB Semifinals and Finals, respectively]), and the fifth for the Chicago White Sox. In best-of-7 playoff series, the California Angels/Anaheim Angels/Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim have a 2-1 series record, a 1-1 Semifinals-round series record, and a 1-2 Game 1 record, while the Chicago White Sox have a 2-2 series record, an 0-1 Semifinals-round record, and a 3-1 Game 1 record. Series 954 is the first best-of-7 meeting between the California Angels/Anaheim Angels/Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and the Chicago White Sox.
