SERIES NOTES:

After Game 6: Best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 919 Game 6 was the first (and last) series 919 home game to be won by the home team, as the host Calgary Flames defeated the San Jose Sharks 3-goals-1. Calgary wins series 919, 4-games-2. The series 919 victory improves the Calgary Flames' best-of-7 NHL playoff series records to 11-12 (overall) and 3-1 (Semifinals). The series 919 loss lowers the San Jose Sharks' best-of-7 NHL playoff series records to 6-8 (overall) and 0-1 (Semifinals). The series 919 win order was WWLLWW: Series 919 is thus the eleventh NHL Semifinals series, the 29th NHL series (all rounds), and the 54th MLB/NBA/NHL series (all rounds) to follow this win order. With the home team winning series 919 Game 6, no MLB, NBA, or NHL series has yet to feature the road team winning the first six games of the series.

After Game 5: With best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 919 in California, the Calgary Flames shut out the San Jose Sharks 3-goals-nil in Game 5 to take a 3-games-2 series lead. When leading a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 3-games-2, the Calgary Flames have a 7-2 overall series record and a 2-7 Game 6 record; when trailing 3-games-2, the San Jose Sharks have a 1-3 overall series record (with an active three-series losing streak; the sole win occurred against Calgary) and a 1-3 Game 6 record (with an active three-Game 6 losing streak; the sole win occurred against Calgary). In series 678 - the only previous best-of-7 playoff series meeting between the Calgary Flames and the San Jose Sharks - Calgary also led 3-games-2 after five games, only to lose Game 6 on the road and Game 7 at home to lose the series to the Sharks. The road team has won the first five games of series 919. The three previous best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series to follow the win/site order of WWLLW @ VVHHV were series 82 (in the 1951 NHL Semifinals, with the Montreal Canadiens leading the Detroit Red Wings), series 685 (in the 1995 NHL Semifinals, with the New Jersey Devils leading the Philadelphia Flyers), and series 693 (in the 1995 NBA Semifinals, with the Houston Rockets leading the San Antonio Spurs). In each case, the final series order was WWLLWW @ VVHHVH - the home team finally won a game with Game 6, and that was enough to win the series. In only two other best-of-7 playoff series had the road team won each game through five games (series 2 - the 1906 MLB World Series in which the Chicago White Sox led the Chicago Cubs, and series 722 - the 1996 MLB World Series in which the New York Yankees led the Atlanta Braves); again, the Chicago White Sox and the New York Yankees would win Game 6 at home to capture their respective playoff series.

After Game 4: The San Jose Sharks visited and defeated the Calgary Flames 4-goals-2 in best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 919 Game 4, thereby knotting series 919 at 2-games-all. When tied 2-games-all in a best-of-7 NHL playoff series, the Calgary Flames have a 6-2 series record (all rounds, with an active two-series winning streak from the 2004 NHL Preliminary and Quarterfinals rounds) and a 7-1 Game 5 record, while the San Jose Sharks have a 2-5 series record (all rounds, with an active four-series losing streak) and a 3-4 Game 5 record.

After Game 3: With best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 919 in southern Alberta for Games 3-4, the San Jose Sharks took advantage of road ice to shut out the host Calgary Flames 3-goals-nil in Game 3. Calgary now has a 2-games-1 series 919 lead. When leading a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 2-games-1, the Calgary Flames have a 7-2 series record (all rounds) and a 4-5 Game 4 record; when trailing a best-of-7 NHL series 2-games-1, the San Jose Sharks have a 1-4 series record (all rounds, with an active four-series losing streak) and a 4-1 Game 4 record. In best-of-7 NHL playoff history from the first completed such series in 1939 through the 2004 NHL Quarterfinals, teams winning Games 1-2 on the road and then suffering a shutout on home ice in Game 3 (such as Calgary) have a 5-1 series record; the sole loser in this situation was the New York Islanders in series 339, losing to the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 1978 NHL Quarterfinals round.

After Game 2: The Calgary Flames visited and defeated the San Jose Sharks 4-goals-1 in best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 919 Game 2, thus taking a 2-games-nil series 919 lead. When leading an NHL best-of-7 playoff series 2-games-nil, the Calgary Flames have a perfect 2-0 series record and a 1-1 Game 3 record. When trailing an NHL best-of-7 playoff series 2-games-nil, the San Jose Sharks have a perfect 0-4 series record and a 3-1 Game 3 record. In best-of-7 NHL Semifinals play, the only team to lose Games 1-2 at home but win the series was the 1945 Detroit Red Wings (in series 53 vs. the Boston Bruins); since then, NHL teams losing Games 1-2 at home in the best-of-7 NHL Semifinals round are on a nine-series losing streak.

After Game 1: With a goal 18:43 into the first overtime period, the Calgary Flames defeated the Sharks in San Jose 4-goals-3 in best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 919 Game 1 to take a 1-game-nil series 919 lead. Series 919 thus becomes the 38th best-of-7 NHL playoff series in which the road team won Game 1 in overtime; in the previous 37 such series, the road team posted a 25-12 (.676) series record. Calgary thus wins Game 1 on the road in overtime for the second consecutive series; the last team to win Game 1 on the road in overtime in two consecutive playoff series was the Anaheim Mighty Ducks in the 2003 Preliminary and Quarterfinals rounds. When leading a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 1-game-nil, the Calgary Flames have a 6-1 series record (with an active five-series winning streak) and a 2-5 Game 2 record. When trailing a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 1-game-nil, the San Jose Sharks have a 1-5 series record and a 2-4 Game 2 record.

Pre-series assessment: In the 2003-04 regular season, San Jose finished ten points ahead of Calgary. From 1939 through the 2004 NHL Quarterfinals, when NHL teams led their best-of-7 playoff series opponents by ten regular-season points, they have posted an 8-6 (.571) series record in those series against those opponents. MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 series 919 is the 23rd best-of-7 playoff series for Calgary, and the 14th for San Jose. In best-of-7 NHL playoff series, Calgary has a 10-12 series record, a 2-1 Semifinals-round series record, and a 7-15 Game 1 record, while San Jose has a 6-7 series record, a 0-0 Semifinals-round record, and a 7-6 Game 1 record. Series 919 is the second best-of-7 meeting between Calgary and San Jose; the first was series 678 in the 1995 NHL Preliminary round, won by San Jose in seven games.
