SERIES NOTES:

After Game 6: Scoring the game's only goal 19:13 into the first overtime period, the Calgary Flames hosted and defeated the Detroit Red Wings 1-goal-nil in best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 916 Game 6. Calgary thus wins series 916, 4-games-2. The series victory improves the Calgary Flames' overall series record to 10-12 and Quarterfinals series record to 4-3. The series loss lowers the Detroit Red Wings' overall series record to 43-35 and Quarterfinals-series record to 7-6. The series 916 win order for the victorious Calgary Flames was WLWLWW. Series 916 thus becomes the second NHL Quarterfinals series, the 13th NHL series (all rounds), and the 32nd MLB/NBA/NHL series (all rounds) to follow this win order.

After Game 5: With best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL series 916 back in Michigan for Game 5, it was the Calgary Flames that emerged victorious on road ice, shutting out the Detroit Red Wings 1-goal-nil to take a 3-games-2 series 916 lead. When leading a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 3-games-2, the Calgary Flames have a 6-2 overall series record and a 1-7 Game 6 record; when trailing 3-games-2, the Detroit Red Wings have a 7-12 overall series record and a 10-9 Game 6 record. From 1939 (the year of the first completed NHL best-of-7 playoff series) through the 2004 NHL Preliminary round, when a team (such as Calgary in series 916) won Game 5 by a 1-goal-nil shutout to take a 3-games-2 series lead, its overall series record was 3-1.

After Game 4: Best-of-7 series 916 Game 4 featured two goals in just 18 seconds by the Calgary Flames to tie the Detroit Red Wings 2-goals-all. The two tallies in 18 seconds were the fastest two goals to tie a best-of-7 NHL playoff game since series 728 Game 3, in which the Oilers in Edmonton scored twice in 12 seconds to knot the Dallas Stars 3-goals-all (and eventually defeat the Stars 4-goals-3 in overtime, in their 1997 NHL Preliminary-round series). Nevertheless, the Detroit Red Wings scored the final two goals in series 916 Game 4 to defeat the Flames in Calgary, 4-goals-2, thereby evening series 916 at 2-games-all. When tied 2-games-all in a best-of-7 NHL playoff series, the Calgary Flames have a 5-2 series record and a 6-1 Game 5 record, while the Detroit Red Wings have a 16-10 series record and a 13-13 Game 5 record. In NBA/NHL best-of-7 Quarterfinals from 1968 through 2003, when a team (eg. Calgary) wins Game 1 and loses Game 2 on the road, and wins Game 3 and loses Game 4 at home, it is on an active eight-series losing streak; ironically, the last team to open a best-of-7 Quarterfinals series with win order WLWL and site order VVHH and win the series was ... the Calgary Flames, in best-of-7 series 462 (vs. the defending Stanley Cup champion Edmonton Oilers in the 1986 NHL Quarterfinals).

After Game 3: Best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL series 916 Game 3 was a game in which all five goals were tallied within an 11 minute 7 second span of the second period, with the Calgary Flames scoring three of those five goals and the visiting Detroit Red Wings notching two. With their home-ice 3-goals-2 victory in series 916 Game 3, the Flames thus took a 2-games-1 lead. When leading a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 2-games-1, the Calgary Flames have a 6-2 overall series record and a 4-4 Game 4 record; when trailing 2-games-1, the Detroit Red Wings have a 9-16 overall series record and a 10-15 Game 4 record. From 1968 through 2003, when an NHL team such as the Calgary Flames opened a best-of-7 NHL Quarterfinals-round series with win order WLW and site order VVH, its series record was 7-8 and its Game 4 record was 5-10, but it is also on a five-series losing streak and on a five-Game 4 losing streak.

After Game 2: Rebounding from their overtime defeat in Game 1, the Detroit Red Wings hosted and defeated the Calgary Flames 5-goals-2, thereby knotting best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL series 916 at 1-game-all. When tied 1-game-all in a best-of-7 NHL playoff series, the Detroit Red Wings have a 17-13 overall series record (and an active seven-series winning streak) and a 16-14 Game 3 record, while the Calgary Flames have a 7-7 overall series record and a 7-7 Game 3 record. NHL teams losing Game 1 and winning Game 2 at home in a Quarterfinals-round best-of-7 series are currently riding a seven-series winning streak that began in 1996.

After Game 1: Winning their first Game 1 since best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL series 540 (the 1989 NHL Stanley Cup Finals, which they won), the Calgary Flames scored at 2:39 into the first overtime period to defeat the Red Wings in Detroit, 2-goals-1. The Flames thus take a 1-game-nil lead in best-of-7 series 916. When leading a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 1-game-nil, the Calgary Flames have a 5-1 series record and a 2-4 Game 2 record; when trailing 1-game-nil, the Detroit Red Wings have a 14-23 series record and a 17-20 Game 2 record.

Pre-series assessment: In the 2003-04 regular season, Detroit finished 15 points ahead of Calgary. From 1939 through the 2004 NHL Preliminary round, when an NHL team led its best-of-7 playoff series opponent by 15 regular-season points, it has gone on to post a 19-5 (.792) best-of-7 series record in that series against that opponent. MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 series 916 is the 78th best-of-7 playoff series for Detroit and the 22nd for Calgary. In best-of-7 playoff series, Detroit has a 43-34 series record, a 7-5 Qtrs-round series record, and a 40-37 Game 1 record, while Calgary has a 9-12 record, a 3-3 Qtrs-round record, and a 6-15 Game 1 record. Series 916 is the first best-of-7 meeting between Detroit and Calgary.
