SERIES NOTES:

After Game 5: Best-of-7 playoff series 911 returned to San Jose for Game 5, and the Sharks ensured no return trip to St. Louis with a 3-goals-1 victory over the Blues. The San Jose Sharks thus improve their best-of-7 NHL playoff series record to 5-7, while the St. Louis Blues see their best-of-7 NHL playoff series record fall to 19-29 (with their third consecutive playoff series loss). The win order for the victorious team was WWLWW: Series 911 thus becomes the eighth NHL Preliminary-round series, the 30th NHL series (all rounds), and the 74th MLB, NBA, or NHL playoff series to follow that win order.

After Game 4: Securing the first road win in best-of-7 series 911, the San Jose Sharks defeated the St. Louis Blues in St. Louis 4-goals-3, thereby taking a 3-games-1 series lead. When leading a best-of-7 playoff series 3-games-1, the San Jose Sharks have a 2-0 overall and Preliminary-round series record; when trailing 3-games-1, the St. Louis Blues have a 2-10 overall series record but a 2-1 Preliminary-round series record. In this situation, the sole Preliminary-round loss for the St. Louis Blues occurred in best-of-7 series 802 (a 2000 Preliminary-round match-up vs. none other than the San Jose Sharks).

After Game 3: With best-of-7 series 911 in Missouri for Games 3-4, the St. Louis Blues avoided a 3-games-nil deficit with a home-ice 4-goals-1 Game 3 victory over the San Jose Sharks. San Jose thus has its series 911 lead reduced to 2-games-1. When leading a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 2-games-1, the San Jose Sharks have an overall series record of 3-2, a (perfect) Preliminary-round series record of 3-0, and an overall Game 4 record of 2-3; when trailing 2-games-1, the St. Louis Blues have an overall series record of 5-14 (and an active four-series losing streak), a Preliminary-round series record of 2-3, and an overall Game 4 record of 8-11.

After Game 2: Taking a 2-games-nil best-of-7 series 911 lead, the San Jose Sharks on home ice topped the St. Louis Blues 3-goals-1. San Jose holds a 2-games-nil lead in a best-of-7 NHL playoff series for only the second time: In best-of-7 series 678 (a 1995 Preliminary round series vs. the Calgary Flames), San Jose led 2-games-nil and won the series in seven games. When trailing a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 2-games-nil, the St. Louis Blues have a 1-12 overall series record and an 0-1 Preliminary-round series record (the sole victory occurred in best-of-7 series 250, in which the Blues topped the Minnesota North Stars in seven games in their 1972 NHL Quarterfinals match-up).

After Game 1: With the only goal of the game tallied at 9:16 of the first overtime, the San Jose Sharks defeated the St. Louis Blues in San Jose, 1-goal-nil, to take a 1-game-nil lead in best-of-7 series 911. Series 911 Game 1 thus becomes the 66th NHL best-of-7 format playoff game to end with a 1-goal-nil final score, and the 25th to do so in overtime. Upon winning Game 1 of a best-of-7 NHL playoff series, the San Jose Sharks have a 3-2 overall series record and a perfect 3-0 Preliminary-round series record. Upon losing Game 1 of a best-of-7 NHL playoff series, the St. Louis Blues have a 3-19 overall series record and a 2-2 Preliminary-round series record. From 1939 through 2003, when a team won Game 1 of a best-of-7 NHL playoff series by a 1-goal-nil tally, its series record was 8-2.

Pre-series assessment: In the 2003-04 regular season, San Jose finished 13 points ahead of St. Louis. From 1939 through 2003, when NHL teams led their best-of-7 playoff series opponents by 13 regular-season points, they have gone on to post a 7-7 (.500) best-of-7 series record in those series against those opponents. MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 series 911 is the 48th best-of-7 playoff series for St. Louis and the 12th for San Jose. In best-of-7 playoff series, St. Louis has a 19-28 series record, a 10-7 Prelim-round series record, and a 25-22 Game 1 record, while San Jose has a 4-7 record, a 4-3 Prelim-round record, and a 5-6 Game 1 record. The ten Preliminary-round best-of-7 series victories by St. Louis ties the Blues with the NHL Detroit Red Wings for the most best-of-7 NBA/NHL Preliminary-round series wins. Series 911 is the third best-of-7 meeting between St. Louis and San Jose; the teams split their first two best-of-7 playoff series (802; 830) against each other.
