OVERALL SUBSTANCE: Arizona wins, WWLLLWW
The Arizona Diamondbacks win best-of-7 series 847, WWLLLWW. They become the 15th MLB/NBA/NHL franchise to win a best-of-7 series WWLLLWW, the 3rd MLB franchise to do so, and the 3rd MLB franchise to do so in the best-of-7 Finals-round.

SERIES NOTES: Game 7 aftermath: The Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the New York Yankees 3-runs-2 to win best-of-7 series 847, 4-games-3. Series 847 was only the third best-of-7 MLB playoff series in which the home team won every game; the previous two series were the 1987 and 1991 World Series (each won by the Minnesota Twins); there have been six NHL best-of-7 playoff series and 17 NBA best-of-7 playoff series in which the home team won every game -- the NBA's Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers have each won five best-of-7 playoff series in which the home team won every game. Arizona trailed by one run after 8 1/2 innings of play but won the game: From 1905 through 2000, there were 81 best-of-7 format MLB playoff games in which the home team trailed by one run after 8 1/2 innings, with the home team rebounding to win only 10 (12.35%) of those games. Of those 10 winners, only one (the 1997 Florida Marlins) staged its comeback in the seventh game of a best-of-7 World Series. Entering Game 7, the New York Yankees had a game win-loss record of 66-1 on the road when leading (by any margin) upon entering the bottom of the ninth inning. Arizona's 37 total runs in the 2001 World Series is a tie for the 10 th most in an MLB best-of-7 series. New York's 14 total runs is only one run more than the record for the fewest runs tallied by one team in a best-of-7 World Series going the full seven games (13 runs by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1985 World Series). Arizona's best-of-7 game record is now 8-4 (.667), and its best-of-7 format game winning percentage is now the highest in the MLB, NBA, or NHL, just ahead of the Colorado NHL Avalanche (67-38, .638) and the Yankees (145-86, .628). Game 6 aftermath: The Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the New York Yankees 15-runs-2 to force a Game 7 in MLB/NBA/NHL series 847 -- the 2001 World Series. In best-of-7 playoff series, this seventh game will be the 34th in the MLB Finals, the 41st in all rounds of MLB playoffs, and the 222nd in all rounds of MLB, NBA, and NHL playoffs. Arizona ties a best-of-7 MLB playoff game record with 15 runs at home, set by the Atlanta Braves in Game 7 of the 1996 MLB Semis (National League Championship Series). Arizona sets a best-of-7 World Series record for most runs in a home game with 15 runs, breaking the record of 14 runs set by the Atlanta Braves in 1991 Game 5 and tied by the Philadelphia Phillies in 1993 Game 4. The 15 runs by Arizona are now the most in a Game 6 of a best-of-7 MLB playoff series (the old record of 13 runs was set in the 1911 World Series by the Philadelphia Athletics and tied by the New York Yankees in the 1936 World Series, the Detroit Tigers in the 1968 World Series, the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1982 World Series, and the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 1992 National League Championship Series). The 13-run victory margin by Arizona is the largest margin of victory by a home team in a best-of-7 MLB playoff game; it breaks the old record of 12, set by the Cardinals in their 13-runs-1 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers in Game 6 of the 1982 World Series in St. Louis. The eight runs scored by Arizona in the bottom of the third inning is the most ever in the bottom of the third inning of a best-of-7 MLB playoff game, breaking the old record of seven runs set by the Chicago White Sox in Game 1 of the 1959 World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Arizona leads of 12 runs after 3 and 3 1/2 innings, 15 runs after 4, 4 1/2, and 5 innings, and 13 runs after 5 1/2 innings are the largest such leads after those number of innings by the home team in any best-of-7 format MLB playoff game. The Arizona lead of 15 runs after 4, 4 1/2, and 5 innings is the largest such lead after those number of innings in any best-of-7 format MLB playoff game, by either the home or the road team. Through six games, Arizona has tallied 28 runs at home; in best-of-7 MLB playoff series, the Minnesota Twins set the record for the most runs scored at home with 33 in the 1987 World Series vs. St. Louis. Game 5 aftermath: The New York Yankees defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-runs-2 in twelve innings, to take a 3-games-2 series lead. As the Los Angeles Dodgers did to the Yankees in the 1981 MLB Finals, so the Yankees have done to the Diamondbacks twenty years later: Post three consecutive one-run wins at home in World Series Games 3-5 after losing the first two games on the road. In Game 4, New York trailed at home by two runs after 8 complete innings: From 1905 through 2000, home teams trailing a best-of-7 format MLB Finals game by two after eight had a 2-42 game record. In Game 5, New York trailed at home by two runs after 8 complete innings: From 1905 through 2001 MLB Finals Game 4, home teams trailing a best-of-7 format MLB Finals game by two after eight had a 3-42 game record. Thus, the historical odds of a home MLB team winning consecutive best-of-7 playoff games after trailing in each by two runs after eight innings are 2/44 x 3/45 = 1/330, or 1 in 330 (0.3%). The home team has won the first five games of the 2001 World Series; the last time the home team won the first five games in the World Series was 1991. Game 4 aftermath: The New York Yankees defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 4-runs-3 in ten innings, to tie the series at 2-games-all. Arizona led 3-runs-1 after eight innings of the game. In best-of-7 MLB playoff games from 1905 through 2000, when the home team has trailed by two runs after eight full innings, its game record was 3-59 (.048). In best-of-7 MLB Finals-round games from 1905 through 2000, when the home team has trailed by two runs after eight innings, its game record was 2-42 (.045). Prior to best-of-7 series 847 Game 4, the only three home team comebacks were by the New York Giants (in Game 5 of the 1911 World Series vs. the Philadelphia Athletics), the Philadelphia Athletics (in Game 5 of the 1929 World Series vs. the Chicago Cubs), and the Atlanta Braves (in Game 7 of the 1992 National League Championship Series vs. the Pittsburgh Pirates). Game 3 aftermath: The New York Yankees defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 2-runs-1, thus narrowing the D'backs' series lead to 2-games-1. The best-of-7 Finals-round Game 3 win is the 24th for the Yankees overall, and the 13th for them at home -- both are MLB/NBA/NHL highs for Finals-round Game 3s in best-of-7 playoff series. The Yankees' team record best-of-7 World Series scoreless streak ended at 18 consecutive innings. The last team in the World Series to lose Games 1-2 on the road, win Game 3 at home, and win the Series was the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1981 (against, ironically, the Yankees); before 1981, the last team to do so was the 1978 Yankees (against the Dodgers). The last World Series team to lose Games 1-2 on the road and win Game 3 by a 2-runs-1 score at home was the 1988 Oakland Athletics, which proceeded to lose the Series to the Los Angeles Dodgers in five games. Game 2 aftermath: The Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the New York Yankees 4-runs-nil, to take a 2-games-nil lead in the 2001 World Series. The shutout loss by New York is their seventh-ever on the road in best-of-7 World Series play, their 14th-ever on the road or at home in best-of-7 World Series play, and their first (on the road) since Game 3 of the 1963 World Series. In series 847, the Yankees' scoreless streak now stands at 17 half-innings of offense (and counting), which breaks a New York Yankees offensive futility record in best-of-7 World Series play: That record was 16 consecutive scoreless half-innings while at bat, set in the 1926 World Series vs. St. Louis (Games 2-3) and tied in the 1955 World Series vs. Brooklyn (Games 6-7). Among MLB teams that took 2-games-nil leads in best-of-7 World Series play, Arizona's 12-run sum of victory margins is the fourth-largest ever (the largest ever was 15 runs, set by Atlanta against the Yankees in 1996). Game 1 aftermath: The Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the New York Yankees 9-runs-1, thereby taking a 1-game-nil lead in the 2001 World Series. The game was the most one-sided World Series Game 1 since 1996, when Atlanta defeated the Yankees in New York 12-runs-1. The game was the most one-sided World Series Game 1 home win since 1987, when Minnesota hosted and defeated St. Louis 10-runs-1. This game was the first-ever in best-of-7 MLB playoffs action in which the home team led by exactly 8 runs after 4 or 4 1/2 innings. Arizona had effectively clinched the game after 5 1/2 innings: In best-of-7 MLB playoff series through 2000, when the home team led by 4+ runs after 5 1/2 innings, its game record is 81-0. In best-of-7 World Series play, the team losing Game 1 by 8 or more runs, irrespective of site, has a 4-1 series win-loss record (Detroit Tigers, 1945; Los Angeles Dodgers, 1959; St. Louis Cardinals, 1982; St. Louis Cardinals, 1987 [lost series in 7 games]; New York Yankees, 1996). Pre-series: Best-of-7 series 847 (the 2001 World Series) is the 42nd best-of-7 playoff series for the New York Yankees and the second for the Arizona Diamondbacks. New York brings a 142-82 (.634) best-of-7 games win-loss record into series 847 -- second only to the Colorado NHL Avalanche (at 67-38 (.638)) among team best-of-7 game records; New York can overtake Colorado with a series 847 sweep. In the 714 best-of-7 format MLB playoff games from 1905 through the 2001 MLB Semis round, the home team has a record of 383-331 (.536); in the 530 best-of-7 format World Series games from 1905 through 2000, the home team has a record of 289-241 (.545). Entering the 2001 World Series, the home team has a two-game losing streak, given losses in 2000 World Series Games 4-5 by the New York Mets in Shea Stadium. In best-of-7 World Series play, the longest home losing streak is six games, set from Game 4 of the 1926 World Series (in St. Louis) through Game 2 of the 1927 World Series (in Pittsburgh) and tied from Game 2 of the 1949 World Series (in New York) through Game 2 of the 1950 World Series (in Philadelphia). In best-of-7 World Series play, the longest home winning streak is 13 games, set from Game 5 of the 1986 World Series (in Boston) through Game 3 of the 1988 World Series (in Oakland). New York enters series 847 with a 2001 regular-season record that was four games better than that of Arizona. In best-of-7 MLB playoff series history, when one team finished four games ahead of its opponent in MLB regular-season play, its series record vs. that weaker team was 5-3 (1-1 in MLB Finals play). In best-of-7 MLB, NBA, and NHL playoff series history, when one team finished four games ahead of its opponent in regular-season play, its series record vs. that weaker team was 31-13 (4-1 in Finals-round play).
