2000 MLB Finals round - Series 822.
New York Mets vs New York Yankees

Schedule and 2000 Results
Regular Season Records: New York Yankees 87-74, New York Mets 94-68
Game 1 on Saturday, 21 October: Mets lose at Yankee Stadium, 4-3 (12)
Game 2 on Sunday, 22 October: Mets lose at Yankee Stadium, 6-5
Game 3 on Tuesday, 24 October: Yankees lose at Shea Stadium, 4-2
Game 4 on Wednesday, 25 October: Yankees win at Shea Stadium, 3-2
Game 5 on Thursday, 26 October: Yankees win at Shea Stadium, 4-2

OVERALL SUBSTANCE: Yankees win, WWLWW
The New York Yankees become the sixth team in best-of-7 MLB Finals (World Series) to win a series WWLWW; the last MLB team to do so in the MLB Finals was the 1988 Los Angeles Dodgers. The Yankees become the tenth team in best-of-7 MLB playoffs (any round) to win a series WWLWW; the last MLB team to do so in any MLB round was, ironically, the 2000 New York Mets in the National League Championship Series (the MLB Semis). The WWLWW win is the 14th in the Finals round of MLB, NBA, or NHL playoff series, and the 66th in all MLB, NBA, and NHL best-of-7 playoff rounds.

SERIES NOTES:
Game 5: The series-winning game was yet another comeback victory for the road Yankees - in best-of-7 World Series history, when the road team trailed by one run after 3 1/2 innings (as the Yankees did in Game 5), its game record was only 15-46 (.246)... Game 4: This game was the 37th in best-of-7 World Series play in which the home team trailed from the end of the first half-inning through the end of the game... Game 4: Through four games, the sum of the absolute values of the four victory margins is only five runs, just one above the best-of-7 World Series record low of four runs set in the first four games of the 1972 World Series... Game 3: In best-of-7 World Series play, teams that win Games 1 and 2 at home now have a Game 3 record of only 13-25 (.342)... Game 3: The historical best-of-7 World Series game victory probability shifted dramatically into the Mets' favor after the top of the seventh inning: After six innings of a tied World Series best-of-7 game, the home team game record was 38-36 (.513); after 6 1/2 innings with the game still tied, that record improves dramatically to 42-20 (.677)... Game 3: The Mets' victory in the third game of series 822 constitutes a minor upset, since the Mets trailed by one run after five innings, and home teams trailing best-of-7 World Series games by one run after five had only a 21-44 (.323) game record... Game 2: Teams such as the Yankees, which win Games 1 and 2 at home in a best-of-7 World Series, have a 23-7 series record, but that record is characterized by streaks: The series record in the first 14 such series was 14-0 from 1907 through 1954, followed by an 0-5 streak from 1955 through 1971 (begun by the Yankees in 1955), and a 7-0 streak has been in progress since 1987; the last team to win twice at home and lose the World Series was the 1981 Yankees; only the Yankees and the Dodgers (once in Brooklyn; once in Los Angeles) have twice won Games 1 and 2 at home and lost the series... Game 2: The Mets set a record for most runs in the top of the ninth inning in a losing cause in a best-of-7 MLB playoff game with five, breaking the old mark of four, set by Brooklyn in Game 1 of the 1916 World Series in Boston; ironically, the final score of that 1916 game was (also) 6-5, in favor of the hometown Red Sox... Game 1 deja vu: The Yankees win Game 1 in the bottom of the 12th, 4-3 (just as they won Game 1 of the 1977 World Series in the bottom of the 12th 4-3); in best-of-7 MLB Finals, home teams trailing by one run after 8 1/2 innings had a game record of only 8-55 (.127) before this series; the Yankees improve their franchise best-of-7 World Series Game 1 record to 20-5 (17-4 at home); the Mets see their franchise best-of-7 World Series Game 1 record fall to 0-4 (0-3 on the road) ... Game 1: The 2000 Yankees become the sixth team in best-of-7 World Series play to send a game into extra innings after trailing by one run going into the bottom of the ninth (Cubs, 1910 Game 4; Washington, 1924 Game 1; Detroit, 1934 Game 2; Atlanta, 1992 Game 6; Florida, 1997 Game 7) ... Game 1: This game was scoreless through 5 1/2 innings; of 700 best-of-7 MLB playoff games, this game is only the 35th to be scoreless after 5 1/2 innings ... Pre-series: The Yankees and Mets meet for the first time in best-of-7 post-season play; Game 1 between these two teams will be the 700th in MLB best-of-7 playoffs history...
