1999 NHL Semifinals round - Series 786.
Colorado Avalanche vs Dallas Stars

Game 7: Dallas wins vs. Colorado, 4-1. Dallas improves its Semis series record to 1-1 (50.00%), while Colorado's Semis series record falls to 1-2 (33.33%). Dallas wins the 22nd Game 7 in best-of-7 NHL Semis history through 1998, and the 93rd Game 7 in best-of-7 NHL playoff history since 1939. In best-of-7 action in all NHL playoff rounds, the team with the 8-game regular-season lead (i.e., Dallas) now has a series record of 9-0.

Game 6: Dallas wins at Colorado, 4-1. The Colorado Avalanche have a series record of 0-1 in series that go to Game 7 (losing in the 1998 Prelim round to Edmonton). The Dallas Stars have a series record of 0-1 in series that go to Game 7 (losing in the 1997 Prelim round to Edmonton).

Game 5: Colorado wins at Dallas, 7-5. The Colorado Avalanche sport a 4-1 series record when leading a series three games to two; the Dallas Stars sport a 0-2 series record when trailing a series 3-2. The last NHL team to have home-ice advantage, start a series LWWLL, and win the series was the 1994 New York Rangers in their Semis series vs. the New Jersey Devils -- the Rangers won that series in seven games.

Game 4: Colorado wins vs. Dallas, 3-2. Once before in all NHL best-of-7 rounds has a team won Game 1 by one goal, lost Game 2 by two, lost Game 3 by three, and won Game 4 by one -- the Minnesota North Stars did so in the 1971 Qtrs vs. the St. Louis Blues. Minnesota in 1971 then won Games 5 and 6 and the series. The 1971 North Stars thus set a favorable precedent for the 1999 Avalanche, against, ironically, the 1999 Stars.

Game 3: Dallas wins at Colorado, 3-0. Twice before in all NHL best-of-7 rounds has a team won Game 1 by one goal, lost Game 2 by two, and lost Game 3 by three. In both cases, the teams winning Game 1 and losing Games 2 and 3 have a series record of 2-0 and a Game 4 record of 2-0 (although neither Game 4 win was by a margin of four goals).

Game 2: Dallas wins vs. Colorado, 4-2. Once before in the NHL best-of-7 Semis round has a road team won Game 1 by one goal and lost Game 2 by two: The 1960 Detroit Red Wings did so, and lost Game 3 by one goal and its series in six games. Colorado falls to 1-2 in Semis Game 2; Dallas improves to 2-0 in Semis Game 2 action.

Game 1: Colorado wins at Dallas, 2-1. In an NHL best-of-7 Semis round, the last time that the road team won Game 1 by one goal was in 1996 (by the Avalanche vs. the Detroit Red Wings; Colorado won that series in six games). Colorado is now 3-0 in Semis Game 1; Dallas falls to 0-2 in Semis Game 1 action.

Pre-series history. In NHL best-of-7 Semifinals action, the Dallas Stars' series record is 0-1 and the Colorado Avalanche's series record is 1-1; Dallas' game record is 2-4 and Colorado's game record is 6-6.

Dallas finished 16 points (8 games) ahead of Colorado in the 1998-99 NHL regular season.

In previous NHL best-of-7 Semifinals action, the team with the 8-game lead has a series record of 2-0.

In previous best-of-7 action in all NHL playoff rounds, the team with the 8-game lead has a series record of 8-0.

In previous best-of-7 action in all NHL, NBA, and MLB playoff rounds, the team with the 8-game lead has a series record of 22-6 (78.57%).
