1999 NHL Preliminary round - Series 774.
Buffalo Sabres vs Ottawa Senators

Game 4: Buffalo wins vs. Ottawa, 4-3. The sweep is Buffalo's fourth in best-of-7 action; the last occurred last year in the NHL Qtrs vs. the Montreal Canadiens. Buffalo's home ice Game 4 win is its NHL-high sixth home-ice Game 4 win during best-of-7 Prelim round action (the Sabres also have an NHL-high three home-ice Game 4 losses during best-of-7 Prelim round action, and an NHL-high nine home-ice Game 4 appearances during Prelim action.) In the history of NHL best-of-7 playoff series, only four other NHL teams swept opponents with better records; the biggest "sweep" upset occurred in the 1993 Prelim round, when 38-36-10 Buffalo swept 51-26-7 Boston.

Game 3: Buffalo wins vs. Ottawa, 3-0. Buffalo last took a 3-0 best-of-7 Prelim round series lead in 1993; the Sabres won Game 4 to sweep that series. Buffalo's Game 3 win is its NHL-high sixth Game 3 win at home during Prelim round action.

Game 2: Buffalo wins at Ottawa, 3-2. In 15 best-of-7 NHL playoff series (all rounds), only once has Buffalo won both Games 1 and 2 on the road: In the 1993 Prelim round, when the Sabres swept Boston. Last year, in only their third best-of-7 playoff series, Ottawa lost their first two Quarterfinals games (on the road) to Washington, and lost the series in five games.

Game 1: Buffalo wins at Ottawa, 2-1. Twice before in NHL best-of-7 preliminary round action has the road team won Game 1 2-1. The series record of those teams is 1-1. Of those two teams, the winner was last year's Ottawa Senators.

Pre-series history. In NHL best-of-7 Preliminary round action, the Ottawa Senators' series record is 1-1 and the Buffalo Sabres' series record is 3-7; Ottawa's game record is 7-6 (53.85%) and Buffalo's game record is 26-32 (44.83%). Buffalo is tied for the most NHL best-of-7 Preliminary round series losses, with 7.

Ottawa finished 12 points (6 games) ahead of Buffalo in the 1998-99 NHL regular season.

In previous NHL best-of-7 Preliminary round action, the team with the 6-game lead has a series record of 2-2.
