United We Stand: 9.11.01

Spring 2016 Day 18:
On Saturday 30 April in the NHL, Tampa Bay hosted and defeated the New York Islanders 4-goals-1, while Pittsburgh visited and doubled Washington 2-goals-1. On Saturday 30 April in the NBA, San Antonio began the 2016 NBA Quarterfinals by hosting and routing Oklahoma City 124-pts-92.

Early Dominance – First Quarter:
San Antonio scored 43 points in the first quarter of their 2016 NBA Quarterfinals Game 1 - the most points in the first quarter of a best-of-7 NBA Quarterfinals game since the Dallas Mavericks scored 44 points against the visiting Sacramento Kings in the first quarter of Game 2 of their 2003 NBA Quarterfinals series.

Early Dominance – Halftime:
San Antonio led Oklahoma City 73-pts-40 at halftime in their 2016 NBA Quarterfinals Game 1 - the third-largest halftime lead ever in a best-of-7 NBA playoff game (behind only the 36-point halftime lead by the Milwaukee Bucks in Philadelphia over the 76ers in their 1970 NBA Quarterfinals Game 3, and the 34-point halftime lead by the Milwaukee Bucks over the visiting San Francisco Warriors in their 1971 NBA Quarterfinals Game 5 and by the San Antonio Spurs over the visiting Sacramento Kings in their 2006 NBA Preliminary round Game 1).

Game 6 Is It:
In the NBA, the Charlotte Hornets (II) and the Portland Trailblazers lead their respective Preliminary-round series with a win/site order of LLWWW @ VVHHV. How valuable is the “momentum” of three consecutive wins? In the history of best-of-7 NBA playoff series, fifteen times have we seen a LLWWW @ VVHHV win/site order through five games. In seven of them, the leading team won Game 6 at home to end matters. But in the other eight, the leading team lost Game 6 at home and then lost Game 7 and the series on the road. Thus is the importance of Game 6 put into perspective in North Carolina and Oregon in Spring 2016. UPDATE: Portland holds serve at home to achieve the series victory; Charlotte does not and thus faces a Game 7 in Miami.

NBA Game 7s:
Irrespective of win/site order in Games 1-6, home teams in seventh games of best-of-7 NBA playoff series [Toronto, Miami] have a series record of 97-24 (.802) in all rounds, and 15-5 (.750) in the NBA Preliminary round. The Toronto Raptors lost their only Game 7 at home, in the 2014 NBA Preliminary round. In Miami, the Heat have a 5-2 Game 7 record.

Game Comeback of the Season:
The in-game comeback of the Spring 2016 NHL/NBA playoff season thus far was achieved by the Islanders in New York against Florida on 24 April. The Islanders trailed Game 6 of their series by a goal as late as 19:05 into the third period, but won the game: In the history of best-of-7 format NHL playoff games from 1939 through 2015, inclusive, home teams down a goal as late as 19:05 into the third period had a game record of only 24-454 (.050).

Series Comeback of the Season:
The NBA Portland Trailblazers trailed the Los Angeles Clippers by a win/site order of LL @ VV after two games, but rallied to win the series early on 30 April. In the history of best-of-7 NBA playoff series (all rounds), teams such as Portland which post a win/site order of LL @ VV through two games had a series record of only 13-222 (.055) prior to the Portland series victory. Of the 13 previous teams to achieve this comeback, one of them was the Portland Trailblazers, in the 1977 NBA Finals.
